I gather that the Jesuit missionaries to china in the 16th and 17th Centuries, e.g Matteo Ricci and others, wanted to create a particular Church in communion with Rome based on Chinese culture, much like the Syrian and Eastern Catholic churches. Does anyone have any views on this/opinions on this? Even better, are there any Chinese catholics around, who would like to offer their opinions?
Also, as a side note, does anyone have any opinions for/against canonization/beatification of Matteo Ricci? In my view it could be good, since the Chinese already consider him a great person for his contributions to 16th and 17th century Chinese science and scholarship.
