The name on the Tombstone?

GOD

Yes! GOD.

Okay, this house is about a block away from mine. They are new people in the area, and I think they moved in less than a month ago (could be a month) and, I dont usually go past this block, but there is some construction around here so I had to go out of my way a block to get to where I was going.

So, I had a couple of thoughts and was going to toss them around here first.
I am really unsure if any of my thoughts are good ideas, or morally the best as a Catholic.

first thought was bring over some muffins as a welcoming gift with a little card inside that says if you have any questions about Christianity, please feel free to give me a call.

Then I thought that would be wrong, because I never intended on giving them a welcoming gift to begin with so its a fradulent premise to go, and for me to “bribe” someone with muffins is insulting, especially if they are wondering if I am only giving them muffins to give testimony.

Second thought was to go that route (again- this would not be the direction I would go but my mind is working on how can I speak to this family…)
with my child trick or treating, and introduce myself, give my name and number and then, hope something connects from there…

Third thought I had was- skip it altogether, let them spew their hate, and not even try.

Any ideas?

Hope this is the best section for this question.

If you really want to share your faith with them I’d say get to know them. If you’re truly friendly with them and value them for who they are you’ll have a much easier time sharing your faith with them. I think you’ve already figured out that if you merely act friendly, they’re going to see right through your act and won’t appreciate it.

These people have not done this accidently. They have taken a stand and drawn a line. They are wanting someone to take up the challenge.

Why not put a sign in your yard that says

[SIGN]Psalm 14:1[/SIGN]

If nothing else, people will likely resort to a Bible to find it is “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’”

Good Idea!

Yeah, I assumed they did this to seek out people to banter with, as this is mostly a Catholic area. There is a smaller Lutheran base here, but its mainly Catholics here. Either way, its loaded with Christians all over the place.

brianwalden- I dont disagree with you but I would really never have attempted to make friends with them even had I not known about the sign.

You cant know everyone, and be everywhere at once. They happen to live on the side where, I really dont pass much. Maybe once in a blue moon if I am going to pick up my nephew from his speech thearpy.

I would try to be friends with them, but its skewed now with this tombstone thing. Now its very hard to imagine an honest senario to deal with them on.

you get my vote on this one too! 👍

On the flip side, maybe they are strong Christians making a statement about secular beliefs.

MUFFINS!!!

DO it!!! Although, honestly, I’d omit the christianity bit, just because it will look TO THEM like a bribe. I’d just be a good neighbor. Good friend, the best thing chrisitanis can do is be a good witness. Then when they ask you about your hope, your kindness, then explian away! So many doors can be opened through friendship 🙂

Put a tombstone in your yard with that famous line:

“Here lies an ATHIEST, all dressed up and no place to go!”

of course, you can always replace “no place to go” with “On the express elevator, headin’ down!”

but your stuff is more charitable.

If I was their across the street neighbor, I couldn’t help but put up a tombstone that reads “Nietzsche”.

Funny ideas Rawb and CatholicCid.

Hmm. I wonder if someone I do know knows their neighbors. Maybe a glance through the parish directory will help here.

How I wish God would send a sign down to them right now, and lightning hit that tombstone.

That may make them believe.

I’m guessing this is just a tacky Halloween decoration and it will be gone after the first week of November when they put up their tacky Christmas decorations. I’d just let it go.

Maybe. You got me to thinking about what company makes such things.

I think I will check this out, and find out who is making this stuff.

There’s a much deeper hurt inside someone who would make such a public statement. They (at this point) are too opinionated to hear anything from you. And even if you did confront them, it would only lead to days or months of listening to them badger our God.

Pray, pray and pray for them. If in casual conversation something should come up then you could mention something about your faith. I am an evangelizer and I speak to all kinds of faiths. Atheists are indeed the toughest. If you have tough skin go for it or else just let them witness you as a loving neighbor.

Remember, they are making this statement for all to see and if it is because they are really reaching out, you will come to know this…teachccd 🙂

Via the means of Blasphemy?

Yeah, as in Secularism killed God. Is that blasphmy? I don’t know.

How about taking the Lord’s name in vain?
How is putting God’s name on a tombstone taking his name in vain?

Sure. Sound like good christians to me.
Whatever 🤷 Maybe they are athiests or some other non-believer and really don’t give a darn what Christians think. I believe that’s their right as Americans. Especially when it’s in their own yard.

Leave them alone. Either they are non-believers who don’t really care what you think or they are uber-Christians who will try convert you to their over-zealous beliefs.

Just curious, but what makes you think they are NOT good Christians and are spewing hate?

Perhaps they are good Christians and they are making a potent commentary about the problems with our modern society? What better way to start a conversation that to show a tombstone that is as controversial as this one? Maybe they are lamenting the “death” of God in our school systems, courts, etc with all the separation of church/state rulings and laws that have been issued?

Praying is a good thing, and there are more reasons given each day to do just that. I do know atheists, and dont really have a hard time connecting on a good level with them actually. I have some atheist and agnostic friends right here at CAF but also (as they know) in real life.
But, you are right- I do think its all about hurt.
