OK, here’s the question (and I promise it’s a real question, not a riddle, no matter how it sounds): 🙂

Can a Catholic man marry a divorced Jewish woman in the Church?

I seem to recall that to marry a divorced Protestant might require an annulment for him or her first…but I thought that was because it was a marriage of baptized persons. Not sure how the laws about the sacraments would apply to Jews.

Just asking on behalf of a friend. I’d love to hear what you know.

Her marriage would need be investigated. Marriages among the unbaptized may be every bit as valid as those among the baptized. *Valid *is not synonymous with Sacramental.

The divorced woman would have to be declared free to marry by the Catholic Church. This would require examination of her prior marriage by the Catholic marriage tribunal for nullity.

The unbaptized can certainly contract valid marriage.

I .
for a Catholic to marry a non-Christian requires a dispensation from the bishop.
before a Catholic can marry any divorced person, that person’s first marriage must be submitted to the marriage tribunal of the diocese for an investigation and judgement of its validity, and is considered valid until proven otherwise. In otherwords, the lady is still married and the Catholic may not become engaged or romantically involved, much less married to her unless and until her first marriage is declared null (never happened, no valid marriage took place). This petition may be filed in the diocese where she lives, where her ex lives, or where they married if that is someplace else. the Catholic party needs to see his pastor now before going ahead with any wedding plans.

One of my RCIA catechumens had her marriage to a Muslim convalidated after his previous marriage was dissolved by a Favor of the Faith [Petrine] action by the Pope. It was fairly straightforward.

Thanks for the replies, all. For the record, the question-asker is the potential future mother-in-law of the Jewish girl, and from what I understand, the couple is not anywhere near that level of seriousness as of yet. It’s just my friend pondering the “what ifs,” just in case. Thanks for helping us out. 🙂
