This is a story of great darkness. After years of life as a sorcerer, and as a priest-leader of witches, he visited the church of the family of his girlfriend, on a dare, where he loudly asserted who he was by the pulpit of a stunned minister. Then a woman said “we’re gonna pray for you.” Does this help explain what happened to him then?

Sounds a little contradictory.
