I recently found out that most forms of artificial birth control are not vegan-approved. Who knew?

Casein is used in the production of most latex condoms. (same with other barriers, like diaphragms). Milk products are used in the manufacture and ingredients of most birth control pills. IUDs involve animal testing. Spermicides are not considered vegan (although I don’t know why).

One website was even suggesting an NFP-style plan as an alternative.

A large portion of pharmaceuticals are not vegan. Hormone replacements could be derived from horses, until a decade or two most insulin was from pigs or cows, and let’s not forget at one time or another calcium supplements were essential ground up shells and animal bones.

Lots of surprising things are not vegan…sugar, jello, margarine.

I never would have guessed barriers were not…who knew!

I know a lot of liberal, “crunchy” women are moving toward NFP as an alternative to hormonal methods. However, many use it in combination with another “natural” preventative methods.

Jesus was not vegan, either. He ate lamb at Passovers and cooked fish on a charcoal fire.

Yes, ABC is not vegan, but it is also not friendly to pre-born babies.

And that’s the nutty irony of it all. People who would have abortions are at the same time worried that their birth control pills might be harmful to snails and fish and whatnot if the pills get into the watershed.

On _the_hill, you are so right.

ABC is a sin. It would be better for them not to sin for God but choosing not to sin for other reasons (even if unknowingly) is still better than nothing. We should support them in this rather than mock them.

BTW it’s hardly universal amongst vegans that abortion is OK. There are plenty of vegans who consider abortion completely contradictory to veganism. I got into a debate on youtube (yeah, I have intelligient debates) about this very topic about a month ago. There was plenty of support for my side.

The bigger problem with ABC from a vegan perspective isn’t actually the water - at least that’s not the first problem I usually hear about. Most have either animal products included or are tested on animals. Things vegans in general don’t like. As for whats in the water - that’s doing enormous harm not just to animals (and why shouldn’t we care about the fish?) but that it is also doing harm to humans. Men don’t need birth control drugs but they’re getting a good dose of them in some places because it’s getting into the water supply.
