Abortifacient nature of the pil

Hi all.

I am on a thread with a fallen away Catholic about Papal Authority. In discussing this one of the issues she has is ABC. When I mentioned the abortifacient nature of the pill, she says there is a study that contradicts this.

Is there a “peer review” study showing the nature.

I thought I put some of this stuff on my “favorites” list and I just spent over 30 minutes looking at it and searching for them but can’t find what she is looking for.

In the past, the family life area always seems to know where to find this info.

If you could post it here or even answer her yourself that would be great.

There is some controversy over the beginning of pregnancy. The medical consensus is that pregnancy begins with implantation, not fertilization. However, some medical sources and many popular ones define pregnancy as beginning with fertilization. Under this definition, any postfertilization effects of the pill would make it an abortifacient, and so the pill’s mechanism of action has become part of the larger abortion debate.

So… the “medical consensus” is that pregnancy begins at implantation, not fertilization…
So maybe that Merck Manual is part of the “medical consensus”???
Changing the definition of when a pregnancy begins is just semantics… when the sperm and egg combine, and new and unique set of DNA is formed… doesn’t matter if it’s implanted or not!

Also, you can go to almost any pill brand website, and pull down the Doctor’s and Pharmacist’s Prescribing Info-- also called the US Full Prescribing Information-- do NOT get the Patient Prescribing Info sheet which completely glosses over or *leaves out entirely *this abortifacient effect. The link for Doctors and Pharmacists does go in to all three methods of how the pill works.

For example, go to the Ortho-Tri-Cyclene-Lo website and click their Prescribing Info. Then, when the PDF comes up, you can read the sheet, where in the “Clinical Pharmacology” paragraph it states

“Combination oral contraceptives act by suppression of gonadotropins. Although the primary mechanism of this action is inhibition of ovulation, other alterations include changes in the cervical mucus (which increase the difficulty of sperm entry into the uterus) and the endometrium (which reduce the likelihood of implantation).”

You can do the same thing on any brand of pill-- for example, Yasmin website which has the exact same quote in the Prescribing Info.

If your friend won’t believe what the pill manufacturers themselves say about their own products, then she is more interested in ideology than facts.

Thank you for posting the information on the thread. She has, so far, ignored it or not seen it since there has been no response even though she has since responded to other posts.

Ah well, since it is not central to papal authority I won’t push the issue on that thread, although the issue in my opinion, has less to do with problems with papal authority and more of selfish desires that have run smack dab into authoritative teachings.

There is a difference I believe between having problems with papal authority and wishing to do things that contradict the teachings of the Catholic Church thereby “creating” a problem with papal authority. Subconcious probably by now, but unless a person actually confronts their selfishness, not much can be done.

And I really haven’t found a “nice” way to tell someone their selfish desires are the problem and not the authority of the Church.

I found this particulary interesting. What a horrible way to combat the growing awareness among women of the abortifacient nature of the pill. Change definitions about when pregnancy begins so as to be able to say it is not an abortifacient agent:(

I would have never thought to go to the website of the manufacturers of the different pill. What a great idea!

And omsoul IS going on my favorite list right now!
