I’m blogging on a political site that has a strong anti-Catholic element, so any help would be appreciated.

I just want to confirm what I heard a few times on EWTN and other places that, for a time, the Catholic Church was the only Christian denomination that was Pro-Life–that all other Protestant/Evangelical denominations were either pro-“choice” or ambiguous about it until they (most of them) finally came around to the pro-life side (I’m thinking that the Eastern Orthodox might have been pro-life all along too, but I’m not positive).

Any help or further details about this would be a great help.

Thanks

As far as I know most Protestant movements began as pro-life but during the 20th and 21st century many mainline Protestant gave into the trends of the day. There are certainly still many Protestants, mostly Evangelicals and confessional groups like the LCMS, that are pro-life. Catholics and Orthodox Christians have always been and always will be pro-life.

Even if you heard that on EWTN I wouldn’t use it as a talking point, seeing as it isn’t true. Plenty of Protestant denominations have always been pro-life. Heck, Luther and Calvin were unambiguously pro-life even in their time. You may be referring to the Southern Baptists in particular who, while originally pro-life, did for a time support leaving it up to the conscience of the mother during the late 60’s and 70’s before coming back to a wholly pro-life position in the 80’s.

Yes, this is true…a lot of other denominations are pro-choice.

However, I think that the Mormon church aka LDS are pro-life.

Someone correct me if I am wrong

The LDS church is actually pro-choice in the circumstances of rape or incest or if the child is going to be born with a defect that will prevent it from having a normal life. Mormons are not Christians though.

I’m not referring to Calvin and Luther (Luther venerated Mary, btw) or various denominations positions’ currently. They change often. I’m referring to the time shortly before and after Roe v Wade was passed. It’s my understanding that most if not all Protestant denominations went pro-“choice” or were ambiguous for a time, then came back to the pro-life position. I’ve heard this from numerous sources. Since abortion is a logical extension of birth control, it wouldn’t surprise me if they got it dead wrong for a time. I did.

I’m talking about Christians, not Mormons.

Edit–I’m pretty sure I heard this from Father Pacwa too.

Yeah again, not likely. Even if you take the hardcore anti-abortion stance of the RCC most Protestant churches did not go Pro-Choice.

No, that is not accurate at all.

I suggest you not post anything without well-sourced facts. For said facts, you can contact the denominations you are interested in and ask them and/or read their websites. Many denominations have historical documents regarding their positions on various issues, documents from synods, position statements, etc.

I realize you want people here to do your research for you, but really you need to do it yourself if you want to be a blogger.

And if you think it was Fr. Pacwa who said it-- contact him and ask him.
