I understand that if one has an abortion, she is automatically excommunicated. If she confesses the sin, does that “undo” the excommunication, or is some procedure necessary before she can be readmitted to the church?
You are correct that normally an excommunication needs to be lifted by a Bishop. However in the case of abortion, most bishops have delegated the authority to lift the excommunication to the priests of their dioceses.
