Hi,

I find myself sometimes in this situation where other Christian churches enjoy challenging my Christian Catholic faith by asking me questions etc. They want me to answer their “tricky” questions or they want me to go to their church instead. What does a good Catholic do to avoid conflict? I have my opinion on it, but I’m willing to hear other ways of avoiding problems. Why are other Christians torturing Christian Catholics?

Thanks,
Templum

First off, understand they are trying to get you to believe that your faith is not the true faith - because that is what they believe. I don’t think they view it as torture. We as Catholics (in general) are deficient in memorizing Bible verses, so we are easy prey to them. If we know our faith well but are not good at explaining it to someone in another faith, we appear weak and wrong, even though we may have good answers to their questions. For example, in a verbal debate, I give in very quickly. I can’t verbally debate someone, it is impossible for me. I get too nervous and second guess myself all the time. Here on the forums, it’s a different matter. I don’t have to think on-the-fly, I can take my time answering a question, and even research it while I’m composing an answer, so it comes easier to me. I have infinitely greater success in aplogetics here on the forums than I do in person. Even if I only get my point across a fraction of a percentage of the time. In person, I never get my point across.

I think your best defense is reading your Bible frequently and probably learning Apologetics. This site is a great place because not only is there a forum, but you can buy books on the subject, as well as go to other places in the internet to buy apologetics books. Others can give you a better list of names to look for books in apologetics, but the Authors that come to mind that helped me and were familiar when I came back to the Church are: Scott Hahn, Patrick Madrid, Jeff Cavins, Mike Aquilina, and more recently here on CA, Jimmy Akin, Rosalind Moss, Tim Staples just to name a few. There are a host of others that I’m sure you’ll come across as you read these forums and research the faith.

Oh, and watch EWTN if you can. I highly recommend Mother Angelica Classics! 👍

One reason, satan truly is seeking the ruin of souls.

What should a Catholic do, study and learn the Catholic faith well, develop a solid prayer life, be willing to say i’ll get back to you if you don’t know the answer or say, I’m not interested in discussing this unless you are willing to listen to my answers.

These are all good answers and advice.

Additionally, if you find yourself out to lunch with your friends, do you pray before a meal (McDonald, Burger King whatever) and do you make the sign of the cross after the prayer?
Do you carry a Rosary (and pray it daily) in your pocket?
Do you wear a sacramental?

Do you do the basic Catholic things really really well without regard to what it may “look like” or "seem like " to whomever?

I don’ t know you and I’m sure that you probably do everything you’re supposed to - the point I’m trying to make (and what works for me) is,…I don’t hide my catholicism - which is to say…my catholicism is obvious to those who know me, surround me, work with me etc. etc.

A person that may see me praying the Rosary in the hospital chapel at lunch time - may ask me “what that is”.

I don’t skip a beat! I proceed to tell that person of how and when the Holy Rosary was revealed to St. Dominic back in the 1200’s. etc etc.

Sometimes to their disbelieving stare and sometimes to their disbelieving smirk. Reactions are different.
But what comes across the strongest is my conviction of what I am saying. I Believe this thing that I am telling you!

I could go on and on but I hope you get the picture.

Gospa Mir ora pro nobis!

whatever you do, do not attend any bible prophecy seminars put on by the 7th Day Adventists!! i got a mailer in the mailbox and did not know who was putting on the seminar and it looked very interesting and a chance to get out of the house in the evenings. the first 5 sessions were interesting and he quoted from Revelations, Daniel, Ezekiel. however, by last weekend, i had a strange feeling i knew where he was headed as far as who the beast is and who is wearing the mark of the beast 666. finally, during last night’s session, he confirmed my suspicions and pointed his finger to Rome and the Pope. there are two more weeks of the seminar left, but i don’t plan on returning. most of the facts he was giving seemed exaggerated and false and we was speaking so fast that you had a hard time following him. it was very sad, because i looked at the other people sitting there and wondered what impression of our Church they will have if they remain in the seminar. i was not the only Catholic there. i am not sure if the other Catholics will return, but i don’t plan on returning.
i did ask about the 3rd or 4th session if a local church was sponsoring the seminar and a woman replied the Adventists.
the man kept saying that the Bible and sola scriptura and i wanted to ask him, if the Catholic Church is so bad, why does he trust the Bible as it was the Church that gave us the Holy Bible?
so i guess they look at all Catholics at have the mark of the beast.

May I suggest that you always start with a silent Come Holy Spirit Come! The smile sweetly as ask, why do you ask?

Then ask do you really want to know what we beleive and why? If yes continue, if not say God Bless you and have a great da!y!

If we are going to “debate or discuss” our difference we need to start from a common level. I alway quote and teach from our Catholic bible because…

If you don’t know, do not pretend that you do, smole and ask can I get back to on that?

If you can’t agree on this one pont, simply agree to disagree and GB, have a great day.

Love and prayers,
Pat
