My parents and in-laws are Roman Catholic liberals. I am wondering how your folks fit into this poll. Parents 60+ feel free to weigh in but please be sure to identify yourselves in the poll.

My inlaws are 60+ life long Roman Catholics. They think this is the saddest thing, we all agreed at dinner the other night that NONE of us want to be starved to death.

Must be nice to be ‘birds of feather’ all in one family

Binney, it’s nice to hear there are others out there in my predicament (although it would be nicer if our parents were not dissenters). However, I rarely hear from Catholics on this or other messageboards that they come from a background of dissent. Perhaps that is because that kind of Catholocism doesn’t encourage children to carry on the faith. Most of my parents’ friends’ kids have pretty much left Catholocism. And for that matter, two out of my parents’ three children did too. And I figure I didn’t despite my parents’ faith, not because of it. Typical of that type of Catholocism, I’d bet my parents are more upset that I’ve become so conservative than they are that my brother is an atheist, and my sister is just lost. I’d like to see a self help group for children of liberal dissenting Catholics (kind of like the AA groups for families).

funny thing you should suggest a self help group for Catholic children of dissenters
sometimes I feel I need one
I think you are on to something very good;)

I did not vote, maybe it is good that my parents are non-denom, my in-laws are Methodist, we are Catholic - we all agree on abortion, the Terri S. case, etc…

I was born in 1962-- that should tell you what kind of catechesis I grew up receiving!

My dad stopped going to Mass when I was 8 or 9. None of my 4 brothers attend Mass or have their kids baptized. My mom goes to Mass and is active in her parish, and though she was raised in Catholic schools in the 30’s and 40’s, she is a bit liberal now. Praise to God, she has some friends who are more conservative and she has come around on some issues.

I got to spend an afternoon with a friend and her family a while back-- her dad is a traditional Catholic- reads Thomas Aquinas and everything! I was a bit envious of her for having a theologically unified family. I know God has a plan, so we stay faithful and try to be a good example. —KCT
