I had this idea that priests cannot attend a mass without con-celebrating it. But this morning I saw that I was wrong. I also had this idea that sisters (not nuns) have to wear their habit all the time when in public. But I saw that I was wrong there too. Sigh… so many wrong ideas…

I was also recently at a Mass in which a priest was sitting in the congregation, and did not concelebrate.

Our assistant parish priest who lives in another parish quite often attends Mass in the general congregation.
Some religious orders have made the wearing of the modified habit (veil anyway) as an optional matter…certain guidelines may apply.

Con-celebration is common since Vatican 2, but before Vatican 2 there was little to no concelebration. However, if there was more than one priest assisting with Mass, the non-celebrants would vest as deacons and subdeacons (depending if it was a High or Low Mass).

When we had the Latin Mass at my parish, we had several priests in attendance but only one priest celebrated it, although another priest did help with communion.
