And since when are females allowed to read the GOSPEL???

The Priest and 2 women have had a kind divided Gospel reading at the 9 AM, 5 Lenten Sunday, RICA Mass.

Only a priest or a deacon may proclaim the Gospel. The only exception I’ve seen was during a Good Friday service: they divided up the Passion story. Also, I believe, the Nativity story at Christmas.

No, the Passion on Palm/Passion Sunday and on Good Friday are the only Gospel readings - during Mass - that may have lay readers involved. No other readings may be divided between readers per GIRM 109

1. If there are several present who are able to exercise the same ministry, nothing forbids their distributing among themselves and performing different parts of the same ministry or duty. For example, one Deacon may be assigned to execute the sung parts, another to serve at the altar; if there are several readings, it is well to distribute them among a number of readers, and the same applies for other matters.** However, it is not at all appropriate that several persons divide a single element of the celebration among themselves, e.g., that the same reading be proclaimed by two readers, one after the other, with the exception of the Passion of the Lord.**

Zenzi, perhaps there is a reason for this, as the same occurred this morning at Mass within my church.

My thought was that it was read this way to emphasize the “parts” of each individual, to come across as the conversation that it is written as.

Most definitely not. The required words in the confessional are per, I think, the canons of Trent, ‘I absolve you’.

But the priest is certainly entitled to ask if you are the last penitent

They’re not, except on Palm Sunday and Good Friday. Zoeybdo’s comment notwithstanding, it doesn’t matter what supposedly good reason the priest thinks he has for doing it. It is not the priest’s prerogative to change how the Mass is said except for those portions where the GIRM allows for latitude. Who reads the Gospel is not one of those areas.

Having said that, unless it is something that happens repeatedly I wouldn’t worry about it.
