If a person opens up his refrigerator and freezer and the only thing he has to eat is meat, he has no need to fast- for that person has already attained heaven.

Abstaining from meat - yes. But we are to do some form of penance on every Friday. It can be abstaining from meat, abstaining from dessert, or a non-food penance like extra spiritual reading or prayer. Or whatever brings you closer to God.
