Hello,
I read that couples using NFP have to abstain from the marital act for 7-10 days. If I understand correctly one has to abstain during ovulation which does not happen when menstruation happens. But doesn’t one practically have to abstain around 5 days during menstruation too? So that would make up to 15 days a month, that is, half of the time, of abstaining. Is this correct in the experience of those of you who’ve used NFP or use it?
Thank you.

It depends a great deal on your personal window of fertility. I think most couples trying to postpone/avoid pregnancy abstain for around a week. However, if you have a very short period of fertile cervical mucus, or a rapid and strong temperature increase, this window may be shorter. In addition, if you’re willing or able to take a bit more of a “risk” of pregnancy, you can cut the window down further. My DH and I desire to postpone pregnancy for a while but it isn’t for life-threatening reasons so we’re willing to take a bit more of a gamble: we only abstain for about 3-5 days per month.

And, btw, while some may certainly not enjoy making love during menstruation, there is no prohibition against it.

My husband and I usually only abstain for a couple of days during menstruation, during the heaviest flow days.
