Ok, I plead guilty as charged: sometimes I watch a particular charismatic television network. The segment last night dealt with getting right with God and he will reward you abundantly, especially in the money area.

Where does this theology come from? Frankly, I find it bogus and perhaps pandering; however, it seems it has become ubiquitous in the more conservative Protestant denominations. Having never been a Protestant I am a novice whern it comes to their beliefs so bear with me in my naivete in this area.

Not being that well schooled in the bible per se, their may be many passages that buttress this “abundance theology.” What may they be?

Any help in understanding this theology would be appreciated.

The only people who get abundant wealth are the tv preachers who con people out of their money.
 
I posted my feelings on this very subject a couple of years ago on this forum. I spoke about my disdain for the un-scriptural drivel espoused by these “Prosperity Teachers” and was “eaten alive” by, not only Protestants, but some misguided angry Catholics as well.

I would hardly call it theology. Maybe one man’s opinion or hope or hobby or job.

If I am right with God, he WILL reward me abundantly according to His will for me. That reward may be money, but it may also be peace, forgiveness, suffering, hardship, pain or joy. The trick comes in recognizing that reward. I try to remember that the thrist for wealth is one of the easiest snares the Devil uses.

I just laugh at the telemarketpreachers who espouse this, especially the guy who has the “miracle $5 prayer cloth”. I agree with Thistle - modern day snake oil salesmen in a $3,000 suit.
Can’t write any more right now, I’ve got to watch this guy on TV tell me how I can become a millionaire within 30 days buying and selling real estate with no money down.😃
 
Prosperity teaching is common. I got sick of it. The Scriptures that appear to back it go on and on: who was it who said a text with no context is just a pretext for a proof-text?
 
it is all over the protestant world now. One good source would be Kenneth Copeland. Tune in to him, read his stuff, you will get the full dose. Oral Roberts is another one. I read a book by him many years ago titled Seed Faith. The idea is that you plant a seed, it grows, and bears fruit.

You also find it in more subtle forms. some sects (the mormans for example) tecach that tithing will bring actual monetary rewards.

The teachers of this are very convincing. And it is an attractive idea, that if you give some money you will get it back multiplied many times over.
 
Kenneth Copeland, Creflo Dollar, and Fred Price are 3 that are big on it. Also, practically everyone on TBN seems to endorse it,

yes it has thoroughly infected the what I call the entertainment side of pop-Christianity.

However I don’t think you find it in the mainline Baptist fellowships, or for that matter in any of the solidly biblical fundamentalist sects. It seems to be primarily an aspect of TV/popChristianity, and it is no accident that these ministers like Dollar and Copeland have most of their world presence through television.

BTW just last night I watched part of a program about the government’s challenge to these TV thieves on what they do with the money. They showed an aerial scan of the Copeland compound. Wow. I had no idea, 'cause when you see o’l Ken on TV he looks like a hick, but his house would make Bill Gates look poor.

Out of the deepest pits of hell, that’s where it comes from. The only things that makes me sicker than the health, wealth, and prosperity gospel are the “preachers” who charge 10 dollars a seat for church services so people can hear them teach devil-doctrine.
