I’m not sure if this is the right place, but…

I’ve been homeschooled all my life. I’m trying to figure out if when I go to college I should just hand in a homeschool transcript of my high school grades (Every college I’m interested in – including the seminary – accepts this, so don’t worry about that), or if I should get a GED? Is it more frowned upon to get a GED than to have a homeschool transcript? I want to just do the transcript, but my father thinks it would be better to get a GED.

If the schools accept the transcript, then that coupled with SAT or ACT scores should be sufficient. Talk to the college admissions office if you have any doubt.

A GED, IMHO, implies you did not finish high school, which is not the case.

My line of thinking exactly. Should I call someone at Benedictine college and have him talk with my father to convince him the transcript is sufficient? What position should I contact?

Yep. Its why my oldest daughter received a diploma, cap, gown, tassle, etc. when she finished highschool after 12 years being homeschooled. Precisely because she did finish the educational goals set out for her. We also furnished transcripts when she enrolled in college. She simply met with an enrollment counselor just like any other highschool graduate. Now a days homeschooled kids are common enough that most colleges don’t bat an eye at home school transcripts.

We do have the kids study for the GED when they are 16 even though we don’t intend for them to take anything but the practice tests. It is more because anyone that can pass the GED is doing better than a number of their peers who graduate from a traditional highschool.

Get in touch with the admissions office. You can also point out to your dad that once you graduate from college, no one will care if you have a GED or not.

Well, I’m unsure. I feel like God might be calling me to become a Priest, but I’m thinking perhaps I should go to Benedicine college first and get a degree in civil engineering with a minor in philosophy. That way, if I go to the seminary afterwards I’ll have philosophy credits and won’t have to spend as much time in minor seminary, and if I discern out I’ll have a job to fall back on. Degrees in philosophy and theology are great fun, but they don’t offer much in terms of jobs.
