Since the new translation - or, I might say, the first good translation 😃 - went into effect late last year, have masses you attend where people would change the language in the offertory prayer to “God and God’s Church” from “… him and his Church” stopped? In other words, has anybody encountered this liturgical abuse still happening? Just curious. It seems to have stopped in the places I go. Interesting.

Other than occasional forgetfulness in saying “… his Church” instead of “… his holy Church”, I have heard of no intentional distorting of this response.

Yeah, when I go to the campus ministry Masses at my college there’s always at least one or two people I can hear doing it. Actually, given how liberally the campus ministry can lean at times, I’m just glad (and kind of surprised, in some cases) that none of the priests do that sort of stuff. I had never heard it before I started college and I don’t hear it when I go to my home parish. Though I do have a textbook that refuses to you any pronouns for God, the most ridiculous being the use of “Godself” instead of “Himself”, which makes it sound not only wrong but very awkwardly written.

That’s great to hear about the priests. I think I may have been to your chapel one time.

You’re in Milwaukee? So I’m assuming MU, but liberal? I’ve always heard that MU was pretty moderate for a Catholic school. 🤷

I suppose it is pretty moderate compared to some of the other Jesuit schools I’ve heard about. I think the theology department (with a few notable exceptions) is more conservative, at least the Jesuits who work in it, but the Campus Ministry tends to be more liberal. No major abuse during Masses or anything, but I think that they push LGBT and feminist stuff further than they should at times.

I’ve attended mass, where the old translation was used (around the new year and last sunday), i think its bcos of lack of the new translation. It was a surprise.

Oh that drives me nuts! Yes, I still hear it, usually from the feminists who think that any use of a masculine pronoun is offensive. Grrrrrr!!!
