i don’t understand how someone who calls themselves a well studied protestant can think that Catholics haven’t “accepted Jesus as their Savior”?!?!?! We started the whole thing for crying out loud (well Jesus did but y’all get what i’m saying). I dunno, i’ve even had people try to tell me that i’m not a christian if i’m Catholic!! lol, i felt so bad for them but quickly proceeded to courteously explain to them what a Catholic is and where *they *got their beginnings as Christians. I dunno, i just thought i’d comment on that!

Good point, if you ever say to them" I’ll pray for you" some of them run a mile:gopray2:

Creedseebas,

Greetings in Christ!

I have come across this many times in my conversations with others. I think it stems down to the distorted understanding of the faith in which they have been taught. What do I mean? There are many misunderstandings about the Catholic faith: statue worship, Marian worship, confessing sins to a man instead of God, Catholics trying to work their way into Heaven instead of having faith, etc… Those people that have said you aren’t a Christian probably for the most part are sincere and really are concerned about your soul. We as Catholics need to reach out to them and with guidance from the Holy Spirit. we should begin teaching them the Truths of the Gospel. If we have great charity and humility, God can begin to use us as instruments to show them the true meaning of a Christian.

In Christ,

Michael

Why not take these occurences as opportunities to begin a little conversation?

First, don’t be defensive. Invite an open discussion of faith.

This is an opportunity to evangelize.

The more that people criticize the faith of Catholics, the more opportunities we have to show them the love of the Church, the care of its leaders, the depths of its riches.

Remember that you are interacting with an eternal soul. What a great opportunity.

not that i think this but…
the reasons some protestants think catholics aren’t saved is that: 1. they believe that the catholic church has added so many things that it has watered down their version of Christianity so much that it has rendered it null and void (please know i don’t adhere to this i’m just providing some insight). 2. they haven’t seen any catholics living out their faith (i.e. evangelization, studying their bible, living a “Christian life”) so they assume there are no catholics doing it. and 3. some of them think that because you follow a man (pope) and believe he is infallible (they don’t understand what catholics mean by this) they think it is a cult. they aknowledge that the church was one, but that along the way it slowly became the things i have described above until the true believers split. again, don’t respond to me about this because i don’t believe it i am just sharing it with you. it does all come down to them thinking they are right and being very condescending about it, but i have seen many catholics (especially on this site) fall into the same trap. let’s face it, luther did have a couple of good points about what was happening in the church. he was by no means right on everything and the things he was correct on have since been changed or modified to come into lines with what the church actually believed (but were not practicing).

i feel i need to add something that i think we all agree with but just needs to be said. there are many catholics (just as there are many presbyterians, methodists, congregationalists, non-denominationalists, etc.) who aren’t Christians. just because some one is a member of a church (even if it’s the catholic church) doesn’t mean they are going to heaven although some people might think that.

As well as the people you meet probably met a Catholic who left the church because they “worship Mary” or one of the many misunderstandings people have. I have met many Fundamentalists who used to be Catholic. It is sad that so many in their own church don’t understand their churches beliefs. However, if they did believe the things they say about the church, I say it is better for them to be Protestant. Worship of Mary would be a mortal sin. I think it is better to have true worship of God, a true love of Jesus in a protestant church than a lukewarm, incomplete or wrong understanding and still be Catholic. It is only a fuller faith if you understand it.

For a while, I kept meeting people who all but yelled at me that I was going to hell for worship of Mary. I find if I can remember that the servant is never greater than the master, remember the persecution Christ went through, I find it a little easier to witness with Christian Love.

God Bless

Maria. Personally I dont know who is saved and who is not. Ill leave that up to our Lord Jesus Christ. We cannot read peoples hearts so we should not judge who is saved and who is not.

What we need to remember is that accepting Jesus is a lifetime event, not a one time forever saved event frozen in time. A radio pastor last night was doing the sinners prayer and he ran out of time so he hurried through it real fast at the end to get the whole message in before his program ended. It was comical! Now if I said the sinners prayer 100 MPH am I still saved? Com’on, The sinners prayer is not biblical and it doesn’t eternally save anyone. The way you live your life, in relation to the faith of Christ is what will save you. Love God, your neighbor, yourself and obey the commandments.

Protestants differ on how they look at catholics. Some will respect our faith. Others will not.

Many protestants have got an education that thaugt them that catholics have another kind of relationship with Christ then they have.

It is not easy to talk with them, because it is not only that they are misinformed about catholic faith, it is also that they are frightend, nearly paranoid about our role in the worlds future story. (Some think we are going to take over the world and force them to be catholics).

If you find the most anti-catholic pages on the web, you will see that our Church is called demonic, - the beast in the revelation, -anti-Christ, the whore of Babylon etc. etc.

It is easy to be provoced by them (I have been that some times). The way they talk sometimes hurt our feelings. We know that they are wrong, but no argument, can make them listen.

It is easy to say, but the best thing is to smile at them and say: “Jesus IS my Saviour, already”.

It’s because I’m accepting Jesus as my Saviour that I’m on my way Home to full communion with the Church.

:amen:

I accept him as my savior on a daily basis. Each and every day I renew my baptismal promises.
Lord ,I accept you today as every day as my Lord and Saviour.
