Accidentally missed a Holy Day

I woke up yesterday with every intention to go to my church’s only Holy Day service at 6pm last night. I even thought about it most of the morning. However, I got busy yesterday around the house, and I completely forgot about it, and I missed mass.

This morning I got on my computer to check other churches in the area, to see if I could attend a mass today, but unfortunately by the time I checked, it was too late.

I am wondering if this is a mortal sin… and if I should not take communion on Sunday. I truly did have every intention of going, I just forgot. I know for a sin to be a mortal sin, there must be intention to commit the sin. I did not intend to skip mass. However, maybe it was a sin to get so busy that I forgot.

You had every intention of making Mass, but you forgot. There is no sin here. You have to intentionally miss Mass for it to be a mortal sin.

Yes. I was also thinking of going last night, but changed my mind because it was cold out. I slept in this morning, and barely slipped in ahead of the priest, to the last Mass of today.

Give yourself a break - you did not commit a mortal sin. This kind of thing is the very reason the Church tells us that we can’t commit a mortal sin by accident. You meant to go, you wanted to go, but you got distracted - it happens.

Where do you all get off on giving someone advice regarding the state of their soul? Which one of you all is a priest? Does this forum have the seal of the confessional?

Just go to confession today or tomorrow & then don’t worry about it again. Good grief.

I was thinking of going today but decided not to in the end after a) a very bad night’s sleep thanks to all the drunken revellers outside and b) according to the Catholic Church in England and Wales’ Liturgy Office website, the Solemnity of Mary isn’t actually designated as a Holy Day of Obligation - here is the link:

I don’t know if you are in the UK too but I hope this lets me off (as I wilfully failed to attend it would be a mortal sin if today were indeed an HDO) - I’m going to Confession tomorrow anyway so I’ll be mentioning it regardless.

Thank you all. I didn’t think so, I just didn’t want to receive communion tomorrow at the Vigil Mass and make it a double whammy. I will go to confession at my next opportunity anyway.
