Accidently stumbled into occult/new age practices. Now what?

I plan on talking to my priest this weekend, but wanted a more immediate answer if I can get one.

I took an essential oils class by a certain company. There were some red flags raised during the class, such as recommending oils for spirituality.

I took some of these oils home to my family and used them on myself, my husband, and one of my children.

Afterwards, the spirituality thing was still bothering me and I searched online for possible concerns. I ended up finding several articles from trusted catholic sites, such as Women Of Grace, that raised concerns about the company’s owner being into New Age practices and witches possibly cursing oils at manufacture.

What was also interesting is that within hours I had succumbed to temptation in several mortal sins when I have been doing very well and usually only committing one or two mortal sins every few weeks. It was out of character.

I’m terrified I’ve exposed my family to demonic influences. I’ve thrown out all oils and materials received from the class as a precaution. Is here anything a priest will be able to do to fix any harm I may have exposed us to, or am I going to look like a nut job?
 
If your the husband of your family you can do Catholic binding prayers over your family. At this point, in my humble opinion, it not necessary to bring to priest. Throw out oils for sure. Go to confession, not like you did this purposely, go for the love of God, but confession does help if there is some evil involved.

  2. Go to confession
  3. Continue to live life.
There are sins that have long footprints, but this is not one of them. Still, now that you know this is a “near occasion of sin,” you should eschew it henceforth.

I think you are letting your imagination run a little wild. It’s fine. I don’t think you need to confess anything or do anything. There isn’t any sin in buying oils, or using them, and a bunch of internet rumors are not exactly a smoking gun regarding the company.

Witches cursing the oils at the manufacturing plant-- yes that is quite a silly rumor.

You do need to see your priest. He will tell you IN PERSON why this is all nonsense.
Internet strangers don’t help people with issues like this. You need someone to look you in the eye and tell you it’s hogwash and you have nothing to fear.
Take the right path and don’t look back. Draw near to God.
 
If you threw the stuff away, I would pray the St. Michael’s prayer and call it a day. Unless the oil blessed on Holy Thursday, I highly doubt it can do anything other than smell good.

NO, I think her priest will be compassionate and tell her that there is nothing to fear.

You may think nutjob is an appropriate thing to say, but a priest wouldn’t or shouldn’t say it.
He would simply calm her fears.

Just gonna second that this is the best answer you’ve recieved in this thread. I’ve seen comments here and there from a deacon/priest on this forum mentioning how this forums leans towards a more scrupulous outlook and that isn’t good when you’re already worrying.

OP, I think that you are being scrupulous. You cannot sin seriously without knowledge. However, it would not hurt to consult your pastor. You could ask him for a blessing. You could use holy water to bless your home and children.
 
You are not being over-scrupulous. Do not dismiss the committing of mortal sins as something usual. They cut you off from God’s grace and make you more susceptible to evil influences. Please go see your Priest asap.

Wait, what? Do you have any proof of “the company’s owner being into New Age practices and witches possibly cursing oils at manufacture,” because if you don’t, then that’s bearing false witness and you’re participating in gossip.

If you have found “several articles” that substantiate your concerns, rather than promote more gossip, then those substantiated articles are what you should bring to your priest’s attention.

I have also read, in Catholic Answers magazine from a former satanist that satanic people will curse children’s costumes in stores around Halloween, and also heard from a Catholic priest that people will curse master copies of porn videos and video games which is part of why they are so addicting.

Many odd, weird things happened before, during, and after the class. They talked about everything having an energy and recommended “spirituality” oils to me after a “reading”. I don’t think oils are inherently evil; but it appears it’s a legitimate problem people are using them for evil.

Still going to talk to priest and see if he thinks I need a deliverance prayer or something. I will have my husband pray over us as well since he has authority.

There is nothing inherently spiritual in essential oils.
Actually,many of the health/physical claims are also currently unfounded.
While it’s true that one of the largest purchaser of essential oils are probably “new age people” that doesn’t mean that Christians can’t also use them if they like the smell of them or whatever.

It’s a bit like Dreamcatchers in the sense that to a Native American person it might have a spiritual meaning but to anyone else they are just home decor.

Regarding the company itself -it sounds like they may have some spiritual beliefs-whether genuine or as a “marketing ploy” to attract more customers who are into this sort of thing.
I would strongly consider not purchasing from this company as they use MLM and I don’t think MLM is ethical.

The spiritual concern is best to talk to a priest about.
These things can be real,but at the same time times it’s also really important to be rational and not superstitious about these things.

BIB Catholics do not believe that anyone other than a priest can “transubstantiate” matter in some way (and even then only bread and wine). Even blessings do not inhere physically in material objects, its is simply a “reserving” for God’s use.

The same for evil and curses. They are only mental phenomena that effect the over suggestive and do not actually inhere in oils, trees or whatever. This is superstitious thinking. The CCC tells us it is sinful to believe in superstition.

Like everybody says, see your priest so he can reassure you on these matters.
