He was born before the U.S. Civil War into a slave family in Missouri. But during the Civil War they escaped into the free state of Illinois, where a Catholic priest noticed the boy who spent a lot of time in church and helped him. It was a time of many special barriers for black people. The boy wanted to become a priest, and the priest and the boy continued praying and trying to enter a seminary, and were finally successful. After he went to Rome for graduate work, where he became a priest, he returned home, where thousands of people, black and white, lined the streets for his arrival, to see the man who escaped from slavery and became a priest.
