Extraordinary things happened there when Bartolo Longo was ceremoniously ordained a priest of Satan. Then he lived as a priest of Satan, saying blasphemous black masses. But in time he ended in very poor shape, his mind twisted and confused. Rebuked by a friend, he returned to Catholicism, and his life became one of deeds of faith. In 1926, he died. In 1980 he was beatified by the Catholic Church.
