What is an “Act of” or “Prayer of” Consecration such as to Mary, or to Saint Michael, or the Sacred Heart. What exactly does it mean when I say a prayer consecrating myself to Saint Michael? Can a person Consecrate themselves to more than one saint?

How about Consecrating your house to something? Does having a priest Consecrate your house to the Sacred Heart have the same effect as simply having a priest bless your home? Can you do both? Can you Consecrate a thing to more than one thing?

Thanks in advance.

The word consecration means to “set aside” for God. There are different consecrations:

Consecration of the gifts: Where the bread and wine become Jesus Christ, for His greater glory and our good.
Consecration of the man: Where the man becomes an ordained minister, to serve in the Person of Jesus Christ.
Consecration of the woman: Where the woman becomes a religious sister, to be Jesus Christ’s eternal spouse.
Consecration to God: Whether directly or through an angel or saint, the person entrusts himself to Jesus Christ as a son throws himself in his father’s arms.

For example, let’s say you consecrate yourself to Saint Michael. By doing so, you not only entrust yourself to Jesus but you also ask for St. Michael’s prayers and protection. You can consecrate yourself to any heavenly being, including your guardian angel. By consecration, you honor God through His creature, whom He created for your sake and you for its sake, for all good things are graces, that is, gifts of His Love and Mercy, free and undeserving gifts for a creature’s greater good. “Consecration” is also known as “recommendation” and “entrustment”. God is all-powerful and consecration is one way He shows His power.

Yes you can have your house blessed, which in the traditional rite involves sprinkling with holy water in each room to drive out Satan (Holy Water contains salt that has been exorcised according to biblical tradition) … and you can have the Sacred Heart enthroned in your home as a consecration. There is a ritual and prayers in the Roman Rituale for both.
