I am worried that just doing an Act of Contrition when in mortal sin is not enough. I read that you can do an Act of Contrition if Confession is not available to you immediately.

I worry that I danger myself more because I am doing the Act of Contrition and still partaking in the Eucharist. I wish Confession was available more than 45 min’s once a week and especially when it is I am at work which it is difficult to get off work.

Its killing me inside. PLEASE HELP

There is no requirement that you must receive the Eucharist every week. It is a good penance to, when in a state of mortal sin, to not receive until you have been to confession.

Don’t worry about what other people are thinking in the pews. Worry about your own state. Making a personal Act of Contrition then receiving the Eucharist is only supposed to be done in great needs, not just because you might not be able to make it. It is good to make the Act of Contrition after doing the act but if it is a mortal sin that is not supposed to be enough to then receive the Eucharist, unless there is a great need.

Talk to your priest about availability of confession. Schedule an appointment. Look to neighboring parishs. In this area we have a monastary that offers confession two times a week on different days then most parishs do. We also have a cathedral that offers it every day. Maybe a little out of the way, but it is worth it.

Thanks for your clarificatioin. Did not make me feel better but only upset. Not your fault but my own stupidity and my habitual sinning (pornography addiction).

I am not worried what others think of me but someting overwhelms me when I can not take the Eucharist or even just attend mass. Haha sometimes I think I am worse the St. Augistine who would claw at the walls to get to Mass. I did not make it to Mass this morning and already have an empty feeling inside.

Funny thing this past month I have contacted 4 parishes to set an appointment all said they will get back to me and never have. It is heart breaking. I called one of the parishes back and the receptionist was quite rude. I became upset slightly and in a stern voice asked her if she realizes how serious the matter is.

Fortunately I found a parish on the way home that is having confession at 7:00pm. I pray I can make it in time.

Pornography is a tough addiction to overcome. A priest can help you determine your culpability in the situation.

There are several groups that can help you overcome the addiction, like SA, Courage (if its a same-sex porno addiction), www.dads.org, and many other places.

If you are seriously trying to give up the addiction, make sure you goto confession every time you fall. The fact you are not able to receive can be incentive the next time you are tempted to not do it.

There a numerous graces for just attending Mass. It is only in the post-Vatican II world that people actually receive as often as they do now. Pre-Vatican II it was common to receive much less.

Don’t give up on trying to schedule private confessions. If you keep getting stonewalled contact the Bishop’s office. Let them know how much trouble you are having.

How sorry I am for you, that as a Catholic, you do not have good and generous support for the Sacrament of Penance. If you had a good orthodox parish or monastery around, you ultimately should be going weekly until the addiction is under control. God doesn’t give us more than we can handle, rather it is learning how to control the addiction. But, in order to handle it, we often need advice.

There is an organization called True Nights at the top of the Morality forum in a thread for links pertaining to such addictions. I strongly encourage you to contact them.

To be caught up in any sinful addiction is disheartening at the very least, but also know that the seriousness, while no less sinful, is mitigated when it reaches the level of addiction. In other words, it can be more venial once a heavy addiction sets in because you are not as in control of yourself, if it hadn’t reached an addictive level (reference the CCC on masturbation, for example).

But, any good confessor, upon seeing your desire to turn from sin, will encourage you to come back weekly, and more often than that if necessary. He may even give you his phone number and tell you to call him if you feel you are about to fall (less common, but I"ve heard of such cases). This is where True Knights comes in because they set up a buddy system using other men, who have overcome their particular sexual addiction - most of which is internet porn as it is so easily accessible.

Don’t give in to despair. It is the worst thing you can do and it gives Satan a leg up, which is what he wants.

If I were you, I would write in to Ask an Apologist and hopefully get Fr. Serpa to answer a question of whether one who is heavily addicted to Porn can possibly receive communion while waiting to make a confession when it is not so readily available in your area. Explain what you have gone through to get to confession. He is solid and will tell you what you can do and maybe give you some ideas.

Are you in a rural area, or a more suburban area where there may be many, many parishes within a 10 mile area?

If you are not in a rural area, I would make a post in this forum with a title that includes your diocese name that may look like this:

“Richmond Diocese - Need to find better confession availability”

Or, something to that effect. You would be surprised how many people may jump in to direct you to this parish or that.

I’m sorry to say, my friend, that parishes with good confession availability is hard to find. When I switched parishes, I managed to land in one that is very orthodox and basic in its Catholicism and we not only have it available every Saturday for 1.5 hours with about 2 priests, but before each mass on Sundays. Some of the priests actually go to their box outside of posted hours and the people come. This includes prior to weekday masses.

This is what I call very generous availability of confession times. It is so wonderful to see the altar boys all lined up prior to Mass and people of all ages take advantage of it. It is how Jesus intended us to use the sacrament - to help us along.

I go weekly to simply build virtue, but I can tell you there was a time when I first got there that I had to work through some very difficult issue. Generously available confession was the key to dealing with those issues.

I will pray for you, but don’t hesistate to use these forums to find a solid church in your area like mine. That parish is only 12 minutes from my home, but in a direction i never drive. I didn’t know it was there and only regret not finding it 25 years ago. There may be a gem like this in your back yard too.

I’m in the Detroit area so if you are anywhere near me, don’t hesitate to go to Assumption Grotto in Detroit or St. Cyril & Methodius in Troy.

Oh, and a little more advice…

You must strive to understand temptation and how to deal with it. You’ve got to recognize the moment you are being tempted and then do what you must to distract yourself. Mere seconds separates this wonderful site from pure God-displeasing filth. It would be far easier to learn to power down the computer if you begin to get those initial inklings to visit an indiscriminate site than to try avoiding them. The first step may be to just get off the computer for 3-4 days altogether if internet porn is what you are addicted too.

Next comes looking for whatever else may be turning your thoughts in that direction, respecting the fact that men don’t need much. However, if you find that a particular program leads you to want to go view pornography, then “cut out your eye if it makes you sin”. That simply means the program is a near occasion of sin for you and must be avoided the way an alchololic must avoid a bar.

The exact canon is:
Can. 916 A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to celebrate Mass or receive the body of the Lord without previous sacramental confession unless there is a grave reason and there is no opportunity to confess; in this case the person is to remember the obligation to make an act of perfect contrition which includes the resolution of confessing as soon as possible.
vatican.va/archive/ENG1104/__P39.HTM

A grave reason might be something like a priest who committed a mortal sin and was unable to get to confession before he was required to celebrate Mass.

So don’t receive Holy Communion if you are in a state of mortal sin. If you have been doing so make sure to confess it (by approximate number) at your next confession.
I did not make it to Mass this morning and already have an empty feeling inside.
If you’re able to make it to daily Mass I suggest asking for the Sacrament of Penance either before the Mass (if there’s adequate time) or after the Mass. Here’s also a website where you might be able to find some other parishes in your area:

Your sins were forgiven—even the ones you didn’t get to mention. But next time you go to confession you need to mention them as an expression of your sorrow and repentance.

Don’t be so shy. Next time tell him that you have more.

This post is confusing because it is signed by Fr. Serpa, but posted by someone else. Can you clarify? If something Fr. Serpa said in another post or email was copied, it may be taken out of context.

I have an icon of Our Lady of perpetual succour on top of my computer. If i am ever tempted, i look at the scared Child Jesus in her arms and thats usually enough to put me off!

You can ask any priest to hear your confession at any time. You do not even have to be in a church.
You are correct that saying the act of contrition is not a substitute for Confession. Confession is a sacrament, and in addition to counseling from the priest and absolution, offers real graces to help you resist ‘the near occasion of sin’ and temptation in the future, and who doesn’t need those?
You also do not have to go to confession at the same church you attend Sunday Mass. Find a GOOD confessor and use him as exclusively as you can- sticking to one GOOD confessor will allow him to monitor your spiritual growth better.

I have done that on several occassions. The one parish has confession every Tuesday at 5:30 pm but it is hour away and sometime I can not get out of work early to get to it.
I had called a couple of parishes to set an appointment but never a return call. How sad.

I hope to get this new job I am interviewing for because then I will not be stuck in office all day. There is a parish in Rockford that has confession every day and a Latin Mass right after that.

On a better note I was able to go to confession last night. I slept so good last night.
