What are some of the activities you do with your significant other on Good Friday? It’s a solemn day, so I suppose the normal “fun” stuff is out. What are some of the other options for spending an enjoyable and meaningful day together? Thank you in advance.

We will go to Good Friday service, and then stay in the Church for one hour afterward. We are typically there from before noon, until after 3pm. Then we go home and sometimes watch The Passion on dvd, or just home to rest and be quiet. No tv, no computers, no music, no shopping, no visiting with friends. Just a quiet house.

My husband will eat nothing all day, only water. I fast as much as I can, but I do have to have a small bit to eat or I get ill feeling, typically just some cheese and bread. So no dinner or cooking for us either.

What do you usually do in the hour afterwards? Veneration of the Cross?

We were also thinking of watching The Passion.

Your husband must have a lot of will power.

We will light a candle around noon, remember that Jesus is nailed on the cross, and let it burn for three hours, then blow it out at 3 pm and pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. We then cover any crucifixes in our home with a dark colored cloth and don’t remove it until Easter Sunday. Our Good Friday service is typically at 7 pm. We, too, try to have a very quiet day and eat less (I cannot completely fast either due to medical reasons).

Stations of the Cross. It’s a holiday here so most if not all parishes have Stations going on some even lasting from 5 a.m to 3 pm Mass, they are a little more involved than a simple Stations of the Cross and a very, very long walk (more than one church involved or over a few areas or up a ridiculously steep hill, kneeling on rough ground) but my friends and I do it sometimes and it is definitely a bonding experience (believe me you need someone encouraging and helping you along).

I’ll be at Church from noon until 3 p.m. for services and then again from 8:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. for Tenebrae. Beyond that I do very little since the entire day has a funereal feel for me.

My girlfriend and I usually go to the Good Friday service, Stations of the Cross & Veneration of the Cross with her family in the evening. In the morning we listen to appropriate Gregorian Chant and pray the Sorrowful Mysteries of the rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet.

We go to the Veneration of the Cross and sometimes the Stations…
Normally we try to get out of the house and get to a park of some sort… out to walk in nature and be more contemplative. State parks, local gardens, etc… very peaceful.

We keep things as quiet as we can with 4 kids! My husband always takes the day off. Last year I printed out pictures for the kids to color, we cut them out and we hung them on purple paper.
We go to church at 3 and our parish has a simple soup and bread supper afterwards that we stay for.

Stations at 3, Veneration at 5.

This will be the first Easter without my parents, so it won’t be hard to have a funeral feel around our place.

Thank you for the reply.
Welcome 🙂

I will pray the Divine Mercy, and just sit quietly praying. Veneration of the Cross is done as a parish, so that will happen as part of the overall service.
We were also thinking of watching The Passion.
I find it extremely difficult to watch this movie, so it will depend on how I’m feeling on the day. :o

He does - and it always amazes me how he can do that. It’s not easy for him either, but he feels it is very important for him personally.
