A person who believes in Pentecostal Oneness (not trinity) sites Acts 2:38 as the beginning of the Church. They believe in baptizing in the name of Jesus because of that passage in Acts. I have been talking to him about the Catholic Church and he is asking when the Catholic church began. Also, he is asking if our church teaches Acts 2:38. I know we celebrate pentecost Sunday every year. I need someone well learned to explain this to me so I can explain it to him!!

The Catholic Church began when it was established by Jesus Christ (Matt 16:18-19).
(In 110 A.D. Ignatius of Antioch uses the term ‘‘Catholic Church’’ to describe the Church Jesus established, see his letter to Symrna, 8, oneness pentecostalism arose around 1914)
The reason Peter says ‘‘be baptized in the name of Jesus’’ was because he was making a distinction between the baptism of Jesus and the various other baptisms like the jewish ceremonial washings, the baptism of John etc Peter was not discussing the formula for baptism, he was only making a distinction. Jesus gives us the formula for baptism in Matt 28:18-20 (baptize in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit).
Does our Church Teach Acts 2:38? yes our Church takes into account the totality of Scripture. We take Acts 2:38, 22:16, Rom 6:4, 1 Cor 12:13, Matt 28:18-20, Gal 3:27, Jn 3:3-5, 1 Peter 3:21, which show that baptism must be performed in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, that our sins our washed away, that we receive the Holy Spirit, that we enter into the body of Christ, that we are adopted sons and daughters of God, that we are clothed with Christ, and that baptism saves us (1 Peter 3:21) What does his church teaches about Matt 28:18-20?

Well first off it is important for you and him to know that his church if it is a penticostal church was founded around 1901 . Our church was founded in the bible .When Jesus said "you are Peter and upon this rock I will build my church " Matt 16 he is refering to our church .WE teach that you must baptize in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit .as it says in Matthew 28:19 . Jesus direct words .

Sorry to interrupt this thread (by just a smudge), but when exactly did the Church start?

When Christ gave Peter the powers to loose and bind?
When Christ told Peter to feed his sheep?
When the Holy Spirit descended to the Apostles?

I know it may be silly to ask, since it all is (at least) forty days difference, but I’d just think it would be interesting to specify exactly when it became “the Church.”

Sorry to interrupt. :o

Hi Scott
From Wiki, Oneness teaching asserts that God is a singular spirit who is one person, not three divine persons, individuals or minds. “Father”, “Son” and “Holy Spirit” are merely titles reflecting the different personal manifestations of the One True God in the universe.

Apprx 1914.

Peace:)

Sorry, I should have clarified: when exactly did the** Catholic Church** get founded? What specific event in the bible?

He started building the Catholic church in Matt16 " You are Peter and upon this rock I will build my church ". This is when it started .

The foundations of the Church were being built throughout Jesus’ ministry, especially after the scene in Matthew 16, where Jesus turned His ministry toward the building up of the Church, where before, His ministry was focused on the building up of the faithful.

The Church was “conceived” when the lance was thrown into Jesus’ side and blood and water flowed out.

The Church was born at Pentecost. That’s when She had Her “coming out” party.

The Church was born sacramentally when water and blood poured from Christ’s side as he hung upon the cross. The water and blood are types of the Eucharist and Baptism, two sacraments which give new life and so gave life to the Church.

CCC 766: The Church is born primarily of Christ’s total self-giving for our salvation, anticipated in the institution of the Eucharist and fulfilled on the cross. “The origin and growth of the Church are symbolized by the blood and water which flowed from the open side of the crucified Jesus.” “For it was from the side of Christ as he slept the sleep of death upon the cross that there came forth the ‘wondrous sacrament of the whole Church.’” As Eve was formed from the sleeping Adam’s side, so the Church was born from the pierced heart of Christ hanging dead on the cross.

The Church was made present to the world on Pentacost when God gave the gift of the Holy Spirit to the Church so that she can infallibly preach the Gospel to the world. The physical brith of the Church was at Pentacost. The Church will be perfected when she is united again with her king.

Article 9 of the Catechism is worth reading.

Thats Nice… BUT

But there claiming to Know More and know better than Jesus Himself

Douay-Rheims (RHE) Matt. 28:19-20

19 Going therefore, teach ye all nations:*** baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost.*** 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you. And behold I am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world.

New King James Version (NKJV) Mt. 28:19-20

19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.

ACTS 2:38 "And Peter said to them, “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit”

Point out to your friend that they are following a PETER Teaching [somewhat out of context] at the EXPENSE of ignoring what Christ HIMSELF taught in Mt. 28:19 [above].

The INFALLIBLE Rule of Bible understanding is that No One passage can contradict another…EVER! This would VOID the merit of the entire Bible.

Look at the last two verses in **John 20 and 21 **and you’ll se that He explains that NOT everything is in the bible. SUCH is true in ACTS 2:38. The rest [understood, used and required] part of Peters Remark would have used the Trinity verbage as Christ Commanded. The reference to Jesus is to His Sacrifice, not a commit on Baptism formula.

The Catholic Church was Founded on the First Pentecost. John 20:19-23 "On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, ***“Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.” ***[22] And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

***As the Father sent Me SO TO I SEND YOU! *** Are the founding WORDS of the CC. NOTE: This means precisely waht it says. “AS” meaning that Jesus had just transfered to His One Faith; One Church the identical Power and Authority that Jesus Had on earth. That is why the very next verse empowers His Priesr to “forgive” sins [actually still done by God].

Eariler Jesus Appointed Peter to HEAD this Church and granted UNLIMITED authority of Governance. **[Mt. 16:15-19] **and proclaimed that ALL SALVATION MUST FLOW through the CC.

ONLY in the CC does God actually and really remain: [Jn. 14:16-17, Jn.17:15-19]. Plus the Most Holy Eucharist** [Mt 26, Mk. 14, Lk. 22, Paul 1st. Cor. 11, and John 6…LOOK at verse 55:)**

And Jesus COMMANDS that we be Baptized in John 3:5

John.3: 5] "Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.”

NOTICE: "Water AND THEE [Holy] Spirit👍

Ok, see my last three or four posts for documentation.

We have a historical record in the Didache, chapter 7 that tells us exactly how baptism was done in the early church. In Acts 2:38 Luke is simply telling us “by what authority” of what rabbi or teacher this baptism is done in — for example, the NT also refers to John’s Baptism too. A name has both reputation and authority, that is why Moses asked God “by what name should I say I am being sent?” Exodus 3:13. We are plainly told that the disciples were ordained by Jesus John 15:16. The Apostles were asked, " And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what name, have ye done this?"(Acts 4:7).

Unbelievers even call on the name or employ Christ’s authority to cast out demons and work miracles ( see Matthew 7:22-24, Acts 19:13, Mark 9:38).

The Apostles were told not to preach by Christ’s authority (Acts 5:28)

Acts 18:15 makes reference to the fact that various “names”, or rabbis had differing interpretations of the Torah – again by the authority of a rabbi.
