Wow.
My dad and I were watching a bunch of Youtube clips last week entitled “Crazy Church People”. This is right up there with them. Acting like a mental patient and babbling incoherently is not the Holy Spirit. There were some people we saw in those videos that looked like they were possessed. It was kinda scary, actually. Some people accidentally injured themselves or others while going crazy. Convulsing, screaming, babbling nonsense that sounded more angry and demonic than anything else.
Non-believers who see this kind of thing are going to end up thinking that Christians are crazy.

I wonder, do they believe that “this” is what happened when The Holy Spirit came upon Mary and The Apostles?
That they screamed and yelled and threw themselves on the floor flapping around like fish out of water?
600,000 millions Christians believe that.

Where is the sound of rushing wind, the tongues of fire, the people going into the street and preaching lucidly and with such effect that thousands of people accepted Christ that day? This may or may not be a manifestation of the holy spirit ( think not but I wasn’t there to have a good judgement of it) but not like the upper room.

This why Paul wrote 1 Cor 12 & 14. I don’t believe that if the Holyspirit enters somebody, he/she would act just like a fish out of the water. The Holyspirit knows about human life so much, that He would not make any human He entered into, became insane. Even when people speak in tongue, there would be somebody who would be able to interpret it. And still, the gift of the ability to speak in tongue is for the good of such person only. Where do you get the idea that 600,000 million (wow 600 billion??, human population in the world is about 6 billion only) christians believe that?

I was under the impression that the number of Christian denominations that believe in the whole speaking-in-tongues-and-rolling-on-the-floor thing was pretty small.
There was a survey posted in another thread not long ago regarding the Christian population of the world. The total was something like 1.9 billion. More than half are Catholic, and about another quarter are Orthodox. Which means that less than half a billion are something else (the number has been placed at about 480 million), and I’m pretty sure only a fraction of that subscribe to the kind of weirdness seen in the video. At least I hope…
What worries me more than that tiny minority is the impression it gives people about Christians. Nobody posts videos on Youtube of a regular Catholic mass or some other normal Christian service. The only stuff that gets posted online is junk like this, which undoubtedly gives many people the wrong idea.

This is point that drives me crazy. If a person truly has the gift of tongues, he/she will not need an interpreter!
This “tongues” that many are led to believe is the language of the angels is nothing more than babbling, being repeated by people who, though possibly sincere, are doing nothing more than repeating noises they heard someone else make at a similar event in the past. This is not tongues.

Dear Jkarp,
That is exactly what Paul had in mind in 1 Corinthian 12:1-31. Each of us was given a particular gift, so that we must gather together to unite ourselves, and use our different gifts for one single purpose, to serve God. None of us was given such complete gifts that he/she can do everythings him/herself. God wants us (as parts of a body) to be united as a complete body, in which Christ is the head.

I appreciate your candor, I see what you are getting at now.
When you read verse 30, you are putting “Do all speak in tongues?” and “Do all interpret?” into a dependant relationship. This does not seem to be the case though. Reading into chapter 13:
Meaning, if I do not have love (the true gift of the spirit), then speaking in tongues is pure noise. The interpretation of the noise of the clashing cymbal is not mentioned. This makes even more sense when reading these verses in light of Acts 2 where interpreters are not needed the apostles speak without the aid of interpreters and are clearly understood by all who listen to them; this is what so amazes the crowds. This brings me back to my original point, the people in the video are not truly speaking in tongues, they are but a clashing cymbal, making incomprehensible noise without the true gift of the spirit.

Dear Jkarp,
I am glad that you understood me, brother. For your last posting, I agree with you, especially about the part I quoted. The Holyspirit does not make us insane (or even look insane) when He comes to dwell within us. I was told by my priest, “if you met somebody who claim to speak in tongues, try to tickle them when they are “speaking in tongues”. If they react, then they are not really doing so”. Please tell me if you did this, and the result of your tickle. It will be fun for me to know.

I’m not sure how anybody could believe speaking in tongues would mean anything else. What benifit would speaking a different language be if nobody could understand you? Rather, it is a gift given on significant occasions when a spiritual leader (such as an apostle or prophet) needed to give a message to those not “of his own fold.” I haven’t watched the recording that is the subject of this conversation, but I’ve read enough about similar topics to know the difference between babbling and the Bible.

Speaking in toungues (biblically) means being able to communicate with strangers (people of different geographical areas ) in “their” own language.
The only time people babbled incoherently coincidentally was when they tried to create a tower to reach God. Because of their arrogance, God caused them to speak in undescernable languages.
The Holy Spirit is never the author of confusion…but we all know who is.
