I was very curious to hear some learned answers regarding the sudden change of person in Acts. There are four or five isolated passages (I guess known as “we” passages) and my Bible’s explanation is not really satisfactory. My Bible also said something about Irenaeus referring to them, but it’s become a sticking point for my little study group that I have going. Help please? The specific verses are 16.10-17; 20.5-15; 21.1-18; and 27.1-28.16.

The Bible commentary in my New American Bible says,
16,10-17: This is the first of the so-called “we-sections” in Acts, where Luke writes as one of Paul’s companions. The other passages are 20, 5-15; 20, 1-18; 27, 1—28,16. Scholars debate whether Luke may not have used the first person plural simply as a literary device to lend color to the narrative. It is more probable, however, that the “we” includes Luke or another companion of Paul whose data Luke used as a source.

The simplest explaination is usually right. The author was present in each of the “we” passages.

I suppose that it is just the abrupt insertion that puts me off. One minute he’s not there, in the other he is.

Read it carfully it all makes perfect sense. 16:8 Paul arrives at Troas where Luke joines him. They together take ship to Macedonia. In verse 19 Paul and Silas are arrested. No more “WE”. because Luke was NOT arrested. In Chapter 20 Paul is baclk in Macedonia and guess what? Luke is still there and they do what? Take ship back to Troas. Then to couple of other places.Luke stays with him all the way to Jerusalem and then the “WE” Passage comes to an end. WHY?? Paul was arrested again. But not Luke. Luke rejouns him when they take ship again to go to Rome.
