I was contemplating Ps.48:21 “man when he was in his honour, did not understand;that he hath been compared to senseless beasts, and made like to them”?

What does this mean?Does this vaguely illustrate that God formed from the earth some disfigured concoction for Adam’s body and it slowly over time panned out to our human form as we know it,then created Adam(immortal soul, intelligence)to elevate him above the rest of creatures?

Just wondering.

The church doesn’t tell us how to believe the story of the first days when everything was made, or how it was accomplished.
Myself, I refuse to project what I know as a 24 hour day on God. His day may be two milliseconds of mine, or it may be two million hours of mine.

I think that just refers to our human body, which as vital and important as it is to us, is really a glorified animal. Biologically, we are naked apes, and our physical functioning from breathing to dying is identical to that of animal life; but we have that human mystery, a rational/spiritual mind, inside our enlarged heads.

I tried to find this verse in the New American Bible. The closest that I came is Psalm 49 which addresses confidence in God rather than in riches. Verse 21 is “For all their riches, if mortals do not have wisdom, they perish like the beasts.” Honour (a high place) could refer to a rich man trusting in his wealth. When that happens the psalm’s author could easily compare this man to a senseless beast who does not have wisdom.

If you are using an older Bible, read through the beginning. Verse 16 is “But God will redeem my life, will take me from the power of Sheol.” It is a person speaking.

I agree with your premise for the beginning of the human race, but disagree totally with you in respect to the individual person here and now.

Why, because if that were so, then the rationale against reincarnation is thrown out the window. That is, that makes this body no more than slop to hogs. However we were designed to be unique vessels for a unique spirit. This biological naked ape theory does the same to reduce the body to just a piece of clothing we must use. Yes, we are dust and to dust we must be returned But…

We are incarnate spirits. That is, we are fleshed out spirits. (Fr. Serpa Mar 9, 2009)*
We die once then there is a judgement.
After the judgement we will be reunited with our bodies.

To say our individual bodies are something less. Well, I just don’t buy it. But the church doesn’t tell us how to believe how our race was developed from the beginning.

Perhaps I’m just picking nits and I am arguing on the same side as I am prone to do. 🤷

*From this board; sorry, I don’t have the link as it is in my notebook here from where I came across it. Just do a search.

The story of the first days when everything was made, at the beginning of human history, there was one man biblically known as Adam and one woman biblically known as Eve. The Catholic Church is very particular in that Adam and Eve are the two, sole founders of the human species.

Human nature (Adam was the first) is an unique unification of both the spiritual *and *materials worlds. Because of the God-created soul, the body made of matter becomes a living human person. There are not two natures united, but rather the union of material anatomy and spiritual soul forms a single nature. Because of this, fully-complete humans developed their talents, especially their intellective abilities, in many ways as human descendents of Adam.

The only teaching the Church has on this is that there was a First man and a First woman from whom the human race descended and if some form of evolution was involved, Adam could not have been the son of an animal as the proper term of animal generation and just how Eve came from Adam is still an open question.

Science is fine but don’t let it take you beyond Church teaching.

What about the rest of psalm 48?

How can any person make a judgment on just one verse 21, which may be referring to a person with honor who only relies on his own honor instead of God? That would not be using wisdom so of course he could be compared to a senseless beast. Everyone knows that the Psalms are very symbolic so I am very curious about what other things that verse can symbolize.

Just wondering.

This is from the Douay-Rheims. You have to read it in the context of the whole Psalm, also the Douay translation is very literal and not necessarily the best. However, the Psalm speakes basically of the foolishness of the unconverted man, whose end will be no better than the common beasts ( even worse). So don’t live like a beast who does not have an intellect and free will but is guided solely by his passions. If we live by our passions, forgetting God and our final end, it is as though we were no better than wild beasts who have no knowledge of their final end. Augustine has some commentary here :.

“He shall enter even unto the generations of his fathers” (verse 19): that is, he shall imitate his fathers. For the unrighteous, that now are, have brothers, have fathers. Unrighteous men of old, are the fathers of the present; and they that are now unrighteous, are the fathers of unrighteous posterity: just as the fathers of the righteous, the righteous of old, are the fathers of the righteous that now are; and they that now are, are the fathers of them that are to be. The Holy Spirit hath willed to show that righteousness is not evil when men murmur against her: but these men have their father from the beginning, even to the generation of their fathers. Two men Adam begat, and in one was unrighteousness, in one was righteousness: unrighteousness in Cain, righteousness in Abed Unrighteousness seemed to prevail over righteousness, because Cain unrighteous slew Abel righteous(4) in the night. Is it so in the morning? Nay, “but the righteous shall reign over them in the morning.”(5) The morning shall come, and it shall be seen where Abel is, and where Cain. So all men who are after Cain, and so all who are after Abel, even unto the end of the world. “He shall enter even unto the generations of his fathers: even to eternity he shall not see light.” Because even when he was here, he was in darkness, taking pleasure in false goods, and not loving real goods: even so he shall go hence into hell: from the darkness of his dreams the darkness of torments shall receive him. Therefore, “even to eternity he shall not see light.” But wherefore this? What he hath written in the middle of the Psalm,(6) the same also he hath writ at the end: “Man, though he was in honour, understood not, was compared to the beasts without sense, and was made like to them” (verse 20). But ye, brethren, consider that ye be men made after the image and likeness of God. The image(7) of God is within, is not in the body; is not in these ears which ye see, and eyes, and nostrils, and palate, and hands, and feet; but is made nevertheless:(8) wherein is the intellect, wherein is the mind, wherein the power of discovering truth, wherein is faith, wherein is your hope, wherein your charity, there God hath His Image: there at least ye perceive and see that these things pass away; for so he hath said in another Psalm, “Though man walketh in an image, yet he is disquieted in vain: he heapeth up treasures, and knoweth not for whom he shall gather them.”(9) Be not disquieted, for of whatsoever kind these things be, they are transitory, if ye are men who being in honour understand. For if being men in honour ye understand not, ye are compared to the beasts without sense, and are made like to them.

Thanks mate, this seems very much on the money.

I don’t need the link; I don’t think there is anything for us to disagree about.

I do not believe that our human bodies are just slop for hogs; I am aware that we need them for being, and in fact, the body is what makes you someBODY!

However, there is no denying that our life functioning, and what happens to us in death, is identical to the course of animal life. We are specialized animals; and our human mind/soul makes us glorified animals.

Natural human life is the same as animal life. When our natural bodies can no longer hold natural life, we die. These bodies cannot hold everlasting life. You cannot pour everlasting life into an old human skin.

But Eternity will exchange or convert the animal “human body” to an everlasting “spiritual body” (Greek: pneumatikon soma). We are glorified animals; we have yet to see the glorified human being.

Catholic teaching is that it is because of its spiritual soul that the body made of matter becomes a living human person. (Source:* Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition*, paragraphs 355 - 365)
However, there is no denying that our life functioning, and what happens to us in death, is identical to the course of animal life. We are specialized animals; and our human mind/soul makes us glorified animals.
Close but not close enough.
The human person possesses the dignity of a person, who is not just something or some animal, but someone. The human person is the only creature on earth that God has willed for its own sake, and she or he alone is called to share, by knowledge and love, in God’s own life. (from CCC 356)
Natural human life is the same as animal life. When our natural bodies can no longer hold natural life, we die. These bodies cannot hold everlasting life. You cannot pour everlasting life into an old human skin.
Yes. Both humans and animals have rotting, decomposing anatomies.
But Eternity will exchange or convert the animal “human body” to an everlasting “spiritual body” (Greek: pneumatikon soma). We are glorified animals; we have yet to see the glorified human being.

"Eternity is a tad too general. Catholics believe in the resurrection of the body under the power of God. The Resurrection of Jesus Christ conquered death and thus assures us that we too will rise.

The whole group of paragraphs 355 - 421 is why after many, many decades, I have grown in my faith. Paragraph 410 which begins “After his fall, man was not abandoned by God.” is my beacon of hope.

As to the material anatomy of Adam, I like to think that God used matter in the same way that most of nature is living matter. Plants, animals, and humans are living organisms composed of cells. All that is amazing to me. Maybe someday, I will get past the amazement and ask the “how” question. Currently, I have come across some interesting answers Maybe I will decide that one of them is correct. I sure hope I do not lose my amazement in the process. 😃

👍

I don’t think you find it anything but even more amazing… 👍👍

God Bless.
