Adding words to consecration

I admit, I get confused with the whole illicit vs invalid thing. I know that mass should be said word for word what is in the GIRM. So…If the proper words are used, but then the priest adds extra phrases in during the consecration, what does that mean? He uses the right words, doesn’t omit any, but adds extra. :confused: I’m confused, please explain what this means, and should the Bishop know about this?
 
Rule of thumb: Do whatever is in red, read whatever is in black. Period.
 
Invalid = no Mass actually occurred; that is, the Eucharist was not confected and offered to the Trinity.

Illicit = a true Mass occurred, but the priest deviated from the laws of the Church in offering it. This is usually a mortal sin if the priest does it deliberately.

In the case you describe, in which the priest added words to the words of consecration-- I would say that is of doubtful validity. It’s definitely illicit, and possibly invalid. This is a very serious matter. I would speak to your bishop about it and avoid assisting at any more of this priest’s Masses.
