Administering DepoProvera- birth control shot

I am a Registered Nurse and part of my job is administering DepoProvera shots (birth control) and counselling patients about birth control. Is this a sin??? I was thinking of just deferring these duties to another shift to avoid it all together.

Good question; you’re in a similar position to pharmacists who dispense oral contraceptives.

Would deferring giving the injection to another RN also give the BC counseling to them as well?

On one side, they’re getting the injection whether or not you give it yourself, right? Or do you get a chance to council them before the injection is given?

My guess is that the patient has pretty well decided on the injection by the time you’re giving it…but if you have the opportunity to council them, perhaps offering NFP as an alternative…you could be in the position to do some real good. On the other hand, if they know that you personally are having someone else give the injection for “religious” reasons, it may give them pause to think about what they’re doing.

I would think no since I think it was determined that people selling birth control stuff as part of their duty was not a sin. However, you are actually participating in the process and administering the shot and then counselling them on the process. I think your situation is a little more sketchy and potentially sinful than the others who just deliver the prescriptions or are counter clerks. You might want to consider having someone else do this if possible but I really do not know whether what you are doing is in fact sinful.

It is objectively grave matter. It is *material cooperation *with contraception, which is always a gravely disordered act.

If done with full knowledge and free will, then yes it would be a sin.

Yes, you should do what you can to ensure you are not required to violate your religious beliefs.
