By what right did they demand anything? They should have stayed in Medina where they belong. What they did was steal from the defenseless. What if the Jews of Israel demanded a jizya from the Palestinians? Why you would be crying “injustice” to high heavens. Here’s the scenario: Christians are living their lives in their own lands [see Spain, France, and Italy, for example], and everything is fine. Muslim conquerors come in and take over their country, behead the men who fought them, enslave the women and children, and demand the rest to convert, die, or pay the jizya, depending on their status. The justification for the jizya is explained to be to “pay for their ‘protection’.” Suddenly the conquered dhimmis need “protection” from someone never identified. This “protection” costs money, we are told, hence the head tax on dhimmis. [Why the ordinary Muslim doesn’t need to pay for **his protection as well is not explained either, but it becomes obvious upon further examination.] The logical question then is, from whom do the dhimmis need to be protected since they didn’t need it before Muslims showed up? Why, their Muslim “protectors”, of course, since they are the only ones now in a position to attack the dhimmis. The ordinary Muslim doesn’t need to pay for his protection because he isn’t going to attack himself. This tax eventually becomes so burdensome that so many dhimmis flee to other lands and the tax base shrinks to a fraction, forcing Muslims to expand to other lands and conquer its peoples. That is why Islamic lands become barren: the productive people are forced out. Have you not noticed that the Jews in Israel made their desert bloom? Now look at Islamic lands … still barren deserts in spite of all their oil wealth. Just imagine if the Jews and Palestinians were forced to change places with the Jews moved onto the Gaza Strip and the West Bank while the Palestinians were given Israel. The place now called Israel will be a desert again, and the Gaza Strip and the West Bank would bloom.
Face it, there is no difference between Muslims demanding jizya and a Mafia protection racket demanding extortion: Here’s that scenario: People are living their lives honestly, and everything is fine. Criminal mobsters take over a neighborhood and approach businesses for “protection” money. If the business didn’t pay, it was vandalized by the mobsters themselves. Once the extortion was paid, the vandalism stopped. If the extortion money ceased, vandalism recommenced. Do you not see the similar pattern? Takeover of territory followed by a demand for “protection” money. If not paid, jihad/vandalism ensues. If paid, jihad/vandalism ceases. If payment ceases, jihad/vandalism resumes. Quod est demonstratum.
That would have defeated the whole Islamic idea of collecting booty; after all, you do need some productive defenseless, people from whom to collect your booty.
