He concluded the interview by stating what he considered to be the causes of the decline of Islam: “Islam has ceased to be a spiritual experience and has become purely ritualistic, [focused on] how women should dress and how men should pray… and with issuing fatwas about killing Mickey Mouse. Islam no longer engages the heart and soul.”

Too late, though, to save the Arabs. Their cultural trends are now set in stone. The no compulsion is a red herring… This was said when the false prophet was trying to convince in Mecca… Once in Medina when he started to fight he said quite the contrary. And Islamic theology always prefer the Medinan later saying to the earlier one in Mecca.
As I have said often, Islam is only the embodiment of Arab nomad ethics: fight, conquer, steal and kill. Instead of the tribe, it puts the super-tribe, the Ummah as its unit, but it is only the ethics of thieving nomads.
