Our parish has just started an adopt a Seminarian program and I’ve adopted two. I would like some ideas on what to say in an introductory letter.

My Priest has asked us to write them letters and maybe send them some care packages every once in a while - I want to do this but I cannot figure out how to introduce myself and my family as their ‘adoptive’ family.

Thank you for any suggestions,

CL

My suggestion:
Hi Seminarian X!
My name is CL and my family (Mrs CL, CL Jr and Mrs. CL Jr.) and I have adopted you as our seminarian to pray for!
We want you to know we are praying for you daily and are proud of you for entering the seminary!
Please keep us in your prayers as we pray for you!
God Bless,
P.S. Enclosed please find the Rice Crispy treats my kids made for you! Enjoy!)
At least that is the type of letter I got as a seminarian back in the day - from a family I didn’t know and I am sure had never met me, they were from another city in the diocese I had never been to.

And for the record, Rice Crispy treats in a foil pan fit nicely into a USPS “priority mail” package, are not that heavy for shipping, and hold up just fine in the mail!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! That is exactly what I needed.

Bless you,
CL

No problem! Glad I could help!

I may not have become a priest, but I got the seminarian part down right at one point. Trust me, away from home, suffering (generally) AWFUL food (yes, seminary food is 9 out of 10 times scary!) and going through trying studies… If they get a card in the mail, a random $10 bill in a letter, a batch of homemade cookies, or a nice rosary, scapular or medal…

THEY ARE GRATEFUL AND ENCOURAGED!

It doesn’t take much.

You want what sounds like a DUMB suggestion? Send your adopted seminarian a 12-pack of Hanes black crew socks… Feet get sore in seminary standing in the chapel! And I have seen enough seminarians with their shoes off to know that the poor blokes often have toe-holes in their old socks!!! Buy the poor fella some socks for his poor sore feet!

It really doesn’t take much to show some support.

And one day, when you get to heaven, you will find out that the seminarian you encouraged maybe became a priest… and offered Masses for you… and when you were down Masses were a source of great grace for you and the kids that made Rice Krispie treats… and got you through… and then you will find out that priest inspired a young lady to become a sister, or a family to have one more child (that became a saint!) and that saint will meet you in heaven and say:

"Thank you for what you did in supporting vocations!"

I have a seminary locally and I would really like to “adopt” a seminarian. How would I go about contacting the seminary and getting in touch with my “adoptee”? Are there set programs in place? Should I call the vocational director?

Thanks

MC

I just signed up for this progam and can’t wait to see who I am assigned to. Quesion for you, do they give you the address where you can write to them? God Bless.
They just give a name. You are to pray for the Priest/Seminarian each day. You will get a packet of information.

I think calling the Vocations Director of your Diocese would be a good idea, tell him your intentions and see what happens. God Bless you.

Call the vocations director or the dean of the seminary.

From there, just ask them pretty much exactly what you asked here.

If they have nothing in place, even taking a tray of cookies over once in a while is welcome! (I have heard rumors that there is a magical seminary somewhere where the food is actually good… I have never been able to confirm it though!)

It’s the Royal English College, Valladolid, Spain. I can confirm that we enjoy excellent food (if you like meat and garlic as much as I do).
