I recently started doing an hour of adoration at church. I have picked out several good titles to bring with me to read…

Catholic Prayers: Compiled from Traditional Sources
Manual for Eucharistic Adoration by The Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration
Uniformity with God’s Will by Liguori
How to Converse with God by Liguori

I am normally a traditional paperback kind of guy, but the price for an ebook for my iPad is quite a bit less than the physical book.

My question, is it inappropriate to take an iPad to read from during adoration?

I am kind of conflicted on it…I am not tempted to being distracted by other things on the iPad, but just the fact it is an electronic device and I wonder if it may somehow take away from the quiet I am enjoying?

Any opinions or advice welcome…

Thanks,

M

I don’t advocate devices in Mass, but at Adoration, in silence, fine.
You are praying attention to pray by readings those books and meditating.

I’ve seen people do it and it doesn’t bother me 🙂 I don’t see how it is different from a book, since you said that the other things on the iPad do not distract you.

Thanks everyone…makes sense…I think I will take it tomorrow and see how I like it…if it proves to be an issue I will just stick to the ol’ school paperback instead…I just did not want to inadvertently break a tradition\rule…I feel better.

This one is my favorite. I pray the Rosary for Priests that is in there.

I am glad you recommend it…I searched for awhile trying to find good material. There is a bookshelf in the adoration room with a smattering of very worn titles, but most of those have been there since I went to grade school there in the 80’s!

Kidding aside, most are pamphlets that have great prayers, but I was wanting something specific to adoration to read after or before I pray the rosary…

(If you like Liguori, you might also try “Visits to the Blessed Sacrament.” TAN Books has a very nice edition that is quite small. You could keep it in your coat pocket or glove compartment for those times you don’t have your iPad with you.)

Plenty of people use devices in adoration. I used to listen to music. There are some lovely renditions of the Sanctus out there.

Wow…thanks for all the great responses and thanks for the suggestions…
I have never participated in adoration till recently. I cannot tell you how much it has calmed me, helped me and strengthened me…
My mom (who is 90) still does her weekly hour and has since I can remember…I am a little sad it took this long to go, but such has been my journey.

I used to do some basic sketch work in Adoration…just thinking now of the art I could create with a tablet vs paper while sitting at the foot of Jesus makes me long to go do it. I loved writing and drawing during adoration. I feel like a little child curled safe in her fathers lap with all the love and affection and approval for who I was and what I could do that I could ever desire.

I just began in Adoration Chapel as well. I am there during the same hour every week in our 24/7 vigil.

To me, I do not bring a tablet, nor do I look at my phone (its obviously with me in case of an emergency, etc but i turn off the ringer). To me, I can look at those things any time. I will read the Bible, or I will pray for intentions of others, which is highly encouraged. At our chapel, we have a box and also a book where people can write intentions that they would like prayed for. I am surprised how fast the hour goes

The hour of technology free contemplation is very renewing. Maybe, but this is just a suggestion, read on your iPad for an hour during your week when you are not at chapel. (like is say, just as a suggestion)
