I’m not sure of the context, so I won’t comment on the rightnes or wrongness of this decision. I do know a case of a young boy whom we visited in the hosptial. He was allergic to flour. We carried it in a special container that made of precious metls but looked like a test tube. It’s the only time that I have seen this doen. But it does not mean that there are not other times when it is allowed.

Fraternally,

In Pastoral Care of the Sick, #181 the practice of bringing the Precious Blood to the sick is described, so it’s certainly permitted.

Thank you Father for that confirmation. I’ve been beaking my head trying to remember the name of that allegy. Is it glutten?

Yes.

It is my understanding that one of the groups opf nuns who make hosts have come up with a very low gluten wafer that has been approved. However, some people’s level of intolerance to gluten is greater than others.

The condition is called Celiac Sprue and yes, it’s an alergy to gluten (alergy might not be the appropriate medical term but that’s the word I often use).

Right. It is a low-gluten host not a gluten-free host. For some that’s a very important point to keep in mind because not everyone can tolerate these.

I have heard stories that some people are so sensitive to gluten, that if they were to take a sip from the priest’s chalice, they would react to the gluten from the particle of the Host which had been dropped in. Whether that is true or not, it is probably something that could be honored without much fuss, simply by the use of a second chalice.

From what I have read, a second chalice is the preferred solution. I don’t know about gluten specifically, but a friend’s son is allergic to almost everything. If someone even touches him without washing their hands they are apt to raise welts due to residues on their hand.
