Adoration Tips

Hi all!

My parish has started adoration on the first Friday of every month. I am very intent on putting in some time before the Blessed Sacrament, but I am nervous. Can anyone offer me suggestions about adoration? How do you keep focused and give our Lord present in the Eucharist the proper reverence for the whole period of time?

Contemplation just between you and Christ is very wholesome, but difficult to attain. I like to bring in a bunch of prayer cards, do a Rosary, and have a book so that if I wander or drift I can pray these things which not only teach us and are good prayers, but lead us into giving God our full attention.

Don’t be nervous! You’ll be in the presence of Jesus - He can’t wait to see you! I don’t go as much as I want to, but when I do, I usually say a chaplet of the Divine Mercy and then either read a book about saints or the Diary of St. Faustina or something like that, and sometimes say a Rosary. I usually find that time to be the most peaceful of my entire day, and don’t worry about staying reverent enough - Jesus’ love will be radiating to you and you’ll be fine. Enjoy it! :heaven:

A priest mentioned this on his homily last Sunday as an intro to or to promote the 40 hours of adoration, “Don’t do anything.”

What does he mean? Simply this, let Jesus do the work. Your job is just to love and adore him in return.

I’ve been going to adoration rather weekly, thanks to a young adult ministry called Spirit and Truth. It’s always been the same… although I don’t feel it anymore, it’s always like being married when you’re in front of Christ. Us being the bride and he being the bridegroom.

Definitely nothing to be nervous about. And if you can’t figure out what to do, just sit in front of him and “experience” God. We’re Catholics, we’re all about the “experience.”

Thanks for this post…lately when I have been going to adoration I wonder why I am there and what I am supposed to be doing. I have been going for awhile and I seem to pray the same thing over and over again…

At Adoration it is nice to just sit there and chat to Him like your talking to your best friend. It’s really beautiful just to talk about everything and anything that you want to talk to Him about. You could then say the rosary, Divine Mercy Chaplet, Chaplet of the Holy Souls especially during November. But just to talk to Him during Adoration is the best thing of all.

This sounds nice to say, but I don’t know that I grasp or experience this. I do talk to him like a friend, I tell Him everything, but it seems like I’m still doing something wrong. A one sided discussion doesn’t make too much sense to me.

Often God speaks to us through Scripture. It may help to bring a Bible along. Pick a Psalm or a short bit of one of the Gospels. Read a few lines until something strikes you, touches your heart, then pause and listen and talk to God about it. Then back to a few more lines of Scripture until something else appeals to you … like a loving dialogue.

I probably should try this, what do I have to lose. My problem is that I usually go right after work, and my bibles are at home. The chapel does have some resources, mostly smaller books which I have been through mostly. Maybe I will see if there is a bible there - never know. (I hate to put my bible in my car…then I’ll forget it and then it will roll around all week with the kids football cleats. )
