Hi. I had missed my Confirmation as I was in a public (non-Catholic) school in high school. I did spend my elementary years in a private Catholic school. As I registered my child for Confirmation last year, I was reminded that I had not been confirmed.
I had spoken to my parish priest about it and he said they will try to offer classes. As it turned out, there wasn’t any adult needing confirmation, but only the Spanish people in our parish, so they had their classes (I suppose in Spanish). Pentecost came and went, my child got confirmed, and I resumed my inquiries at the parish office. I left a message with the Secretary with my details to pass to the parish priest. No response. After a couple of weeks, I called the parish priest and left a message on his voice mail about my issue and my availability for an interview but he never called back. A month later, a new parish priest took over.
Inquiries with other parishes would always categorize me into someone needing RCIA instruction. It seems to be a standard answer when they hear the word “adult”. I am not a convert. I am a baptized Catholic, never lapsed in my faith and practice, am attending monthly recollections with a Catholic group, have frequent (once a week or every two weeks) Confession, even more frequent Holy Communion, and am receiving spiritual direction. I practice norms of piety as often as I can…plus daily rosary with my kids, and First Friday masses. In the near future I plan to be able to attend daily mass.
I don’t think I need to be treated like someone just opening my eyes to the faith for the first time, with RCIA. I do not understand why it’s easier for the converts to get baptized AND confirmed at the same time while I get ignored requests in my parish office. My parish church’s indifference is very discouraging. Other churches’ standard replies are not much help either. It’s starting to hurt me and make me very anxious. I don’t need a fancy affair to be confirmed, and maybe just have it with my family and the priest or Bishop (and a sponsor if needed). I just need this Sacrament to complete me.
Please advise. Should I write to the Bishop?
Thanks in advance for your replies and may God bless you.
