An interesting topic has come up on another forum that I belong to regarding a couple of polls on stem cell research.

One poll (http://harrisinteractive.com/harris_poll/index.asp?PID=488) shows that people are in favor federal funding of Stem Cell research by a 73 to 11 percent margin. No mention of embryonic in the survey.

The second poll (http://www.lifenews.com/bio434.html) shows 47 percent opposed to federal funding when the term embryonic is included in the survey question.

There is much more interesting numbers in both surveys that I will not go into here.

My question is what is the Church’s position on Adult, as opposed to Embryonic, Stem Cell research?

PF

i would like to know that, too. As my Father who is a Physician Assistant and works in the ER wants me to go into stem cell research when I get to college. I know that embryonic is forbidden, as it is just like abortion. but I am not sure about adults.

In a pamphlet by Our Sunday Visitor on Stem Cell Research it states " The church also makes it clear that is does not oppose all stem cell research, only that research involving the destruction of human embryos."

Besides, adult stem cells are the only ones scientists have had any success with so far in treating leukemia and also juvenile diabetes, spinal cord injury, immune deficiency and corneal damage. And, stem cells can be found in the placenta, umbilical cord and adult brain, bone marrow, blood, skeletal muscle, and skin. Supporters of embryonic stem cell research won’t tell you that!

Lori:

That is what I though, but I wanted to be sure about it.

With the culture of death that permiates the culture today, we need to get all the iinformation out via alternate sources like the internet.

You are very welcome and the thanks should go to my diocesan pro-life office director. We just had a meeting yesterday and she had all kinds of wonderful research things in our packets on all kinds of pro-life topics including the CA voter’s guide if you can believe that!! 🙂 I think this should definately be an important topic to bring to light. Too many people are not well informed on this issue. They tend to believe what they hear on the news, not the real story.

My husband works in biotech and that is the truth. Adult stem-cells are the only ones that have any promise rigt now, but even thinking about a cure for anything is so far in the future that it’s mainly theoretical. Claiming embyonic or even adult stem cells hold the key for cures is not quite accurate. We don’t know!

Adult stem cells and stem cells from umbilical cords are licit and the only forms where real progress has been made in this field. The church supports these forms of stem cell research. On the other hand, progress with embryonic stem cells or therapeutic cloning is all smoke and mirrors. Not to mention the fact that embryonic stem cell research and/or therapeutic cloning is an abomination - creating human beings for the sole purpose of experimenting on them and ultimately killing them. As far as ethics goes, it doesn’t get much worse than that! It’s a shameful legacy of our culture today.

“According to this week’s issue of The Lancet medical journal, the German doctors used a mesh cage, a growth chemical and the patient’s own bone marrow, containing stem cells, to create a new jaw bone that fit exactly into the gap left by the cancer surgery”

FYI - They are not sure if it was the stem cells that contributed to the growth. Govt’s and companies, in Europe and Asia, who claim to have success w/ stem cells usually are trying to gain research money or notoriety - their claims should be taken with a grain of salt.
