Does an advent wreath need to be blessed before I may begin using it at home?
 
You could bring it to Mass with you (First Sunday of Advent) and have the priest bless it, which I think would be more appropriate than blessing it yourself.

There is a section in the Book of Blessings that has a formula for blessing the Advent Wreath. You could even suggest to your pastor that people bring their Advent wreaths to Mass so that they can be blessed after the Post-Communion Prayer. That would be nice gesture because you bring to the domestic Church (your home) an element the Church uses to mark Advent.
 
Where in the rubrics does it allow for the blessing of advent wreaths from home, during Mass?

Oh Jim, by the way, for that one brief, fleeting moment that I agreed with you, we got a cold front.🙂

That 's why I indicated that such a ritual could occur after the Post-Communion prayer, as this is the time that may be used for announcements or extra-liturgical prayers such as the Angelus that the Holy Father recites during those Masses where he is away from Rome and can’t pray it from his balconey). 😃

Yes Priest don’t have enough to do with a shortage because parents do not want their son becoming priest and can you imagine all those wreaths like kids don’t have enough play with in church and yes I know this is not the thread for it so bye
 
Most of the books I have seen for use with the Advent wreath include a blessing for the wreath to be done by the father of the family. It is a domestic church devotion, so the blessing is done by the head of the domestic church. That’s how we have done it in our family.

It’s still nice to have the priest bless it becasue then, it brings to the Domestic Church a concrete symbol used for the Universal Church’s liturgical season.

On Holy Thursday, we have the custom of giving out blessed bread (mini French loaves, if you will). The priest blessese them and then gives them to the faithful as a reminder of the Last Supper. This tradition has been going on for several years, I think even more than a century and a half, if I’m not mistaken.

I look at the Advent Wreath almost the same way.
