According to Amy Wellborn ABC decided to air subsequent commercials of NuvaRing and then Pampers during the ABC movie night of Harry Potter. Included in the link below is a short way to complain to ABC (it does literally take a few seconds).

Here’s the text

Sit right down and right a letter
…excuse me while I dash one off to ABC.

Katie just got home from going to some haunted cave thing with a friend. She flipped on Turner Classics. The tail end of Gilda. She switched to ABC - showing Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Watched a few minutes. Commercial break.

For this. An ad that rather explicitly describes what NuvaRing, the great new contraceptive does and how it works.

During a Harry Potter movie?

From the website:

How does ABC determine which commercials to air?

All commercials and promotional announcements for ABC’s programming are reviewed by our Department of Broadcast Standards and Practices to ensure compliance with company guidelines. We also impose scheduling restrictions on some commercials to make certain that they air only within programs appropriate to their target audience.

Here’s the feedback page, if you’d like to join in. It will take 2 seconds.

(I’ve also been concerned about some of the commercials aired during Lost - all the more reason to tape n’ view later.)

And Katie could not help but note the irony of the commercial that directly followed the one for NuvaRing -

Pampers.

wake up parents, if you want your children to watch one of these movies rent the DVD, or Tivo it and flip through the commercials. On the average “family time” program you will see a lot worse than ads for BC, feminine hygeine products, do children really need to hear plugs for ED meds? Activists have been successful in limiting beer and cigarette commercials, where is the activism against these sexually explicit ads – including seductive women and men in provocative scense marking dishwashers and shampoo.

I’ve only seen one version of the the NuvaRing commversial and it is as dorky as they come. Some advertising execs scraped the bottom for this ad.
