Hi all. My dad has been dealing with alcoholism for many years now. I’d say 25 to 30 years. There was a period of time where every single night, he could barely even talk due to the heavy drinking. I must say those days are over but he is still drinking heavily and starts drinking around 10 or 11 in the morning. My mom and I decided we are going to intervene but not sure how to go about this. He is sliding back to those “dark days” of heavy drinking and he is shutting people out of his life. He gets very angry when confronted as this not the first time she has approached him. I made contact with a rehab representative and all I really got was a sales pitch.

My question is, is it ok to have resources lined up and present options to him? Or is it best for us to formally state our concerns and let him take the bull by the horns?

Thanks everybody

I suggest you and your mom get in touch with Al-Anon. This is for family members of alcoholics. They will be able to guide you on when, how, and whether to have an “intervention” with the alcoholic.

If you are a teen, I also suggest you get in touch with Alateen.
