From Jimmyakin.com:. 'The standard counsel for scrupulous people is to assume the sin was not mortal unless the opposite is manifestly evident.’

I’ve heard this put another way:. ’ When in doubt it doesn’t count!’ (from Trent Beattie’s book ‘Scruples and Sainthood’).

And a good priest recently told me that ‘the doubt is always in your favor.’

All good points. On the forums here, another good piece of advice for the scrupulous considering posting their inquiries about sins is simply: don’t. One should seek the counsel of a single, regular confessor and follow his guidance.

Scrupulosity is a religious manifestation of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). OCD has no religious treatment. It has scientific treatments including both talking therapy and drugs. If people with OCD manifesting in scruples change their religion so will the nature of the OCD. If you have scruples, seek advice from a medical professional. There is nothing wrong with simultaneously seeking religious advice.
