This is my first “real” post, and, I readily admit that I have no idea what I am doing. I don’t know what a thread is. I just have a question. I want to purchase a study Bible for a young man who has recently been attending my church. He is brilliant, and the only person I know who avidly reads the RC Catechism. He has expressed a desire for a good Bible, and I offered to get one for him. Does anyone have a recommendation? He ia not presently a Catholic, but he is in the process of becoming one. He has MANY questions. Please advise, and maybe I’ll even be able to find your answer. May you have a hopeful and blessed New Year.

Here is an excellent concise article…covers all the translations…and then some details on Commentaries on the Bible and different translation types…language issue. by Colin B. Donovan, EWTN…here is the beginning,

Bible Versions and Commentaries
Liturgical Use in United States
There is only one English text currently approved by the Church for use in the United States. This text is the one contained in the Lectionaries approved for Sundays & Feasts and for Weekdays by the USCCB and recognized by the Holy See. These Lectionaries have their American and Roman approval documents in the front. The text is that of the New American Bible with revised Psalms and New Testament (1988, 1991), with some changes mandated by the Holy See where the NAB text used so-called vertical inclusive language (e.g. avoiding male pronouns for God). Since these Lectionaries have been fully promulgated, the permission to use the Jerusalem Bible and the RSV-Catholic at Mass has been withdrawn. [See note on inclusive language]
Devotional Reading
A bewildering array of Catholic Bibles are available for personal use. They all have imprimaturs, but not all avoid the use of inclusive language. That use is indicated in the summary. The order is generally chronological.

Also…Here is an excellent Bible Resource…Bible Gateway…many…mostly Protestant versions…and in various languages…but it does have two great English Catholic Translations…The Douay Rheims and the recently re-edited/published Knox translations.

You select the version…enter the Book in the Bible…chapter…verse(s)…and “search”…
once it appears…you have an option to "add parallel:…meaning see same Scripture selection as translated in a different Bible…you can have three versions side-by-side.

You might consider ‘The New Catholic Answer Bible’ from Fireside Catholic Publishing. It has 88 New Catholic Answer Bible inserts in it that answer all kinds of questions regarding the Catholic faith. It is a very good Bible for RCIA.

==========================================

Good one!

I use The Online Parallel Bible (bible.cc). Fantastic resource which includes concordances, Greek, Hebrew texts and lexicons, Strong’s notes, just a BUNCH of great stuff. As for a hold-it-in-your-hand Bible, I just got the Little Rock NABRE Study Bible, and it is GREAT! 👍 (See littlerockscripture.org/en/Detail.aspx?ISBN=9780814636497) I use Bible Gateway, too, especially when I want to see two common, modern versions side-by-side like this Matthew 2:16-18 = biblegateway.com/passage/?search=matthew%202:16-18&version=NRSVCE;NKJV in a post like this
aloha-friday.org/archives/4627. I think a combination of good online resources is a great way to get going, but an actual physical book you can use for making notes (although that option is available on some online sites like ESV.org and Oak Tree) is also a necessity. There are some pretty good tools for Apple products, especially form Oak Tree Bible Study (search in iTunes); I use that nearly every day. Whatever you choose, daily use will make it a treasured gift. :amen:
