Hi, everyone.
I know I said in my previous post that I was going to start searching for a spiritual director, but I haven’t found one yet so I’m going to post here because something’s been gnawing at me.
So a couple days ago I was quoting what someone on T.V. said I saw to my mom. He said ‘Oh my G-d’ out of surprise. When I was quoting the person, I knew that saying Oh my G-d was a sin, but I said it anyway while I was quoting him because I thought my quoting had to be ‘accurate’ and I knew that this quote wasn’t coming from me. Did I sin by still taking the Lord’s name in vain even though the words weren’t mine, or am I being scrupulous?

Is saying, “Oh my God” taking the Lord’s name in vain?

When you hear God’s Name being used in a bad way, you can say a little prayer like this: Blessed be the Name of God.

If you are recounting something, you actually don’t need to quote precisely. You can say someone exclaimed; was surprised, shocked, horrified; etc.

Good advice, thanks. Did I commit a sin though, even though I wasn’t intending to be disrespectful toward God?

If you feel it was not respectful of God’s name, confess it.

In this instance, you described something you saw or heard. You told the truth, but the question is whether you should have spoken differently. In the future, try to consider the alternatives. On television, we often see things that are disturbing, inappropriate, disrespectful, or vulgar. Should you tell about it in detail? Should you describe it in general terms? Should you not tell it at all? It depends on the situation, what you saw, and to whom you are speaking. If you think before you speak, I am sure you will do fine.

In my opinion, if you say it in prayer, it is not a sin. For example, if you witness a serious accident, you might say “Oh my God” meaning “Lord, help us.” If you hear some really wonderful news, “Oh my God” might signify praise and thanks to God.

On the other hand, if you see a cute puppy, an advertisement for the latest iPhone, or a grease spot on your jacket, it might be inappropriate to exclaim “Oh my God!”

You are being scrupulous. Quoting someone else’s words is not the same as using your own words.

Thanks. I thought it was a sin because I knew taking the Lord’s name in vain was wrong but I said it anyway to keep the ‘accuracy’ of the quote.
And yeah, I do have a tendency to be really scrupulous/OCD sometimes. :o
