Advise before visiting a Byzantine Rite Catholic Church

I am not positive, but I think the only people who have “veperal liturgies” on Saturday are Ruthenians. The vesperal liturgy is an interesting specimen!

Us Ruthenians are the only Byzantines who routinely have vigil divine liturgies that I am aware of.

Great Vespers is combined with the Divine Liturgy of St. Basil the Great on Holy Thursday and Holy Saturday. This combination is also appointed to be served on the eves of the Nativity of Christ and Theophany when those feasts fall on any day other than Sunday or Monday.

According to some traditions, when the feast of the Annunciation falls on a weekday of Great Lent or during the first three days of Holy Week, the festal Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom is combined with Great Vespers on the day of the feast itself.

So, the EO in general accept the practice for the Annuciation, and for Holy Thursday and Holy Saturday, and the OCA and Antiochian Orthodox in America allow for many feasts.

Simply put, Holy Thursday and Holy Saturday Vigil Divine Liturgies are part of Byzantine praxis and Tradition. Other days are tradition or economia.

To the OP: You can always tell a litany by the beginning. The Deacon or Priest will say something along the lines of “Again, let us fervently make supplication to the LORD!” followed by something like “Blessed is our God always, now, and forever and unto the ages of ages. In peace let us pray to God…”

The first time I went I thought “why do we keep praying all these petitions over and over…didn’t He hear us already!!!”

That’s one major difference I’ve noticed in prayer style. The Eastern style is very repetitive and fervent, whereas our Western style is very concise and powerful. Western prayers are almost “proclaimed” like a law (the Roman style of making decrees), whereas the Eastern style is very poetic (because of the oral traditions in the East). Both are very beautiful and compliment each other well.

All those petitions? How many do the Ruthenians have now with their new translation? Not many, they cut out more than what was cut before. There should be a Litany of Peace at the beginning of the Liturgy. Then small extenia between the antiphons. Then there should be several extenia after the Gospel including the Extenia for Catechumens, and so on and so on.

Anyone who complains about all those petitions in the Ruthenian liturgy should visit a Coptic Orthodox church. Around here, liturgy is 3.5 hours, then religious education and youth activities follow for another 2.5 hours after that. 6 hours, and that doesn’t include fellowship time after!

What you need to do is just relax and watch what the other people are doing.

Don’t worry about “looking new”, as I’m sure everyone there will already know that.

They’ll be EXPECTING you to make mistakes!

Also, the inside of Eastern Catholic Churches are usually much more ornate than Latin Rite Churches. The icons, the Royal Doors at the foot of the altar, etc. It might be a lil overwhelming at first, so just sit down and let it all soak in.

And expect to be a little confused at first (for a while!) …

The Eastern Rite Catholic (Byzantine Rite Catholics) have instill a curiousity in me so much that I plan to go visit a Byzantine Catholic Church, (and how much it differs than the Latin Rite) after my deployment. I’m from the Latin Rite but lately my search and zeal for Jesus Christ has lead me in an Eastward direction.
