Last Friday I was in a thrift store (got a 1st edition of Fulton Sheen’s Life of Christ only $2.50!
) and got into a conversation with a young African-American man (well my homemade button that says “Your POLITE questions about the CATHOLIC CHURCH cheerfully answered!” may have had something to do with it
) and it seems this young man considers himself an “Israelite” because Jesus, Moses, Soloman, etc were all “black” --and because of a single verse in Deuteronomy where Moses curses the tribes for disobedience, saying they will be carried in ships to to the land of bondage, and America=revived Egypt, so, QED, African Americans are “israelites”–or I think that was his thought train–never mind he had that verbal tactic of constantly trying to talk, never giving me space for response, at the end it was a strange and fruitless conversation–actually, to be honest, it ended up as an argument.
Lets see, the young man considered us Catholics to be Egyptian pagans because “Cat” is in our title (he ignored when I told him it comes from the Greek “for all”) and the Egyptians worshiped cats (never mind “cat” for felis domesticus comes from the german, LONG after we started calling ourselves catholic) and there was the old tired thing of Bishops, especially the Pope, is a dagon worshiper because he wears a miter (my point that it was a 7th century AD formal hat from eastern europe that had NO connection to dagon worshipers of babylonia 1400 years prior again made no impact).
In all, I recognized Marcus Garvey afro-centrism of 70 years ago, mixed with stuff right out of Jack Chick. Finaly it ended with the young man admitting he didnt attend any Church (no surprise there
)
Anyway, what did I learn from this??–Well, if someone like is so invested in a deluision–RUN!!!
