After the 12th century, the Roman Catholic church withheld the cup from the laity. why?

I feel for the priests who minister to such large congregations, it cannot be easy for them and I guess we all suffer with a shortage of priests. My thoughts are also for the suffering that our Lord endured for me, and for each and every one of us.
