Hi 🙂 I went on a few websites for contemplative cloistered orders, and for their age limit it said 18-34 or 18-35.
Does anyone know, is this how most of them are?

I’m 22 now so I’m not in a big rush to discern my vocation (I’m not sure at the moment, and anyway I’m not even officially Catholic yet! I’m entering the Church hopefully this year)… but I just want to know so that I can plan… 😉 (although I do realize that we can’t plan everything and we don’t know the future, and it’s really all up to God)

what about active/contemplative orders…? I really like the Sisters of Life and on their website it says 18-35, but they’re willing to make exceptions in a few circumstances.

I prefer the traditional orders with full habits… is it true that for most of them (at least the ones that are really growing) the age limit is around 34-35?

thanks 🙂

thanks for the info! 🙂

I don’t know if this is true, but I heard somewhere that the orders that are really growing have lower age limits (~35) and the orders that accept older people that’s because they need more applicants.

Is this true?

I’m sure that there ARE really good orthodox orders that accept women over 35 though.

Sorry one more question lol!
Is the age limit for when you can first apply…not finish formation? So - if you’re 34 you can apply and then be a postulant, novice, etc. That’s alright?

Hi Monica, no that’s the age for acceptance of a candidate. God bless you and help you in your search, that He will lead you to the vocation He desires for you! 🙂

Regards, Trishie

The orders that have a low upper age limit, usually 30-35, and that are growing rapidly–are not numerous. They receive a lot of press, but when you get down to it, there aren’t a lot of them. There are a few Discalced Carmelite monasteries, a few enclosed Dominican women’s monasteries, a (very) few Poor Clares, the Sisters of Life, Franciscans of the Renewal, St Cecilia Dominicans, Dominicans of Mary Mother of the Eucharist, Franciscans of the Martyr St. George–that are growing and have habits --and then there are a number of communities with 1-2 professions a year, or who have no information available. There are a lot of habited orders that aren’t growing rapidly, who should be open to an ‘older’ age candidate.

usually an order or monastery will look on an older vocation on a case-by-case basis. They might make the process of joining a bit longer but it isnt always a “hard limit”

thats been my experience as a 45 year old man. fwiw 🙂

Our Delayed Vocations yahoo group starts at age 30, which is actually a little below average, but the lowest cut-off age someone had seen on a community’s website.

groups.yahoo.com/groups/delayed_vocations/

You’d qualify for Women in Discernment, though:

groups.yahoo.com/groups/womenindiscernment/

You have to be Catholic for 3 years before anyone will admit you.

Discernment can take years, particularly if there is no attraction to a particular charism. One discerner just entered a Benedictine monastery in the UK, and when she started with us, she had no attraction whatsoever to the OSB rule.

Have you seen our website: cloisters.tripod.com/ I don’t know where you’re located, so I can’t offer regional suggestions.

If there are any communities near you, go visit with them and speak with the vocations director. They have a ton of experience, especially with those who feel attracted to the religious life, but are also in the process of converting or are converts.

Just keep in mind that the Holy Ghost works on attraction, and grace builds on nature.

HTH.

Blessings,
Cloisters
