In the national law enforcement community, one often hears phrases such as “community oriented policing” and “neighborhood policing” tossed about, expressions embodying a particular enforcement philosophy of a given police chief, sheriff or other high ranking official.

In years gone by, I embraced a fairly radical “zero tolerance” approach. A violation of the law was just that, and there was but one way to deal with it.

Today, my heart is softened. Make no mistake, at 41 years of age, I’m bigger, stronger, and better trained to deal with a potentially deadly physical altercation than anytime before in a career spanning two decades, but I’m a much different police sergeant than I was just a scant two years ago…

Full story here, and your comments are always welcome!

Jeff, it looks like a great site! And it’s always wonderful to see a fellow Omahan. How is the CWS going, by the way? Didn’t make it down there this year.

Hi there, Mo4. Good to hear from you.

The CWS is busy as always (I supervise a crew of officers in South Omaha, so it’s a big deal for me every year). Weather’s been cooperative overall, though we’ve suffered a couple rain delays.

Thanks for the comment on the article. I hope it touches many people.

Peace,

Jeff
